Maritime Charity Celebrates Centenary at London Guildhall Dinner

The leading maritime charity, Seafarers UK, is holding its Centenary Dinner at Guildhall this evening, exactly 100 years to the day since the first meeting was held in 1917 in the City of London to discuss the formation of the charity (previously known as King George’s Fund for Sailors).

Almost 300 guests will attend a formal Reception and Dinner in Guildhall to mark the occasion. Celebrated guests will include HRH The Earl of Wessex (President of the charity since 2012, when he succeeded The Duke of Edinburgh), Admiral of The Fleet The Lord Boyce, Admiral The Lord West of Spithead and the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones.

Opening of CESSAC Community Cafe, Colchester

On 31 October 2016, the CESSAC Community Cafe was formally opened in the Community Centre in Fallowfield Road, Colchester by Brigadier Colin Weir, Commander of 16 Air Assault Brigade. The building is the Community Centre for over 850 Service families, largely from his Brigade, the main units of which are: 7th Para RHA, 2 & 3 PARA, 13 Air Assault Support Regt RLC & 16 Close Support Medical Regt.

DAB Digital Radio Launches in Aldershot Today

Ofcom has licenced a small number of trial stations for Small Scale Digital Audio Broadcasting (SSDAB) across the UK, and the Forces Station BFBS was one of those awarded a trial licence.

Part of the trial involves offering a number of services to listeners via the same DAB transmitter, so you can now tune in via DAB in the Aldershot area to BFBS Aldershot, BFBS Gurkha Radio (our Nepali language service), BFBS Beats, Radio Caroline, Angel Radio, the breeze, This Is Electric and Radio Woking.

FiMT and DSC release “Sector Insight:  Armed Forces Charities in Scotland” report

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and the Directory of Social Change (DSC) today release the Sector Insight: Armed Forces Charities in Scotland report, calling for more transparency about the finances and functions of Armed Forces charities in Scotland and dispelling some public misconceptions.

The report – the first to focus specifically on armed forces charities registered in Scotland, which follows on from the Sector Insight, UK Armed Forces Charities report, published in November 2014 – will help to inform Scotland’s policy direction and those working within the charity sector. It delves into the finances, purposes and functions of over 300 armed forces charities, including those that operate on both sides of the border. The report focuses on how charities in Scotland are categorized, what provision they make for their beneficiaries, and offers an overview and analysis of these charities.

New Management Team Heralds New Era at Finchale

A dedicated ex-serviceman is hailing a new era after taking the helm as the new Chief Executive Officer at Finchale this week.

Mel Pears MBE took over the reins as the new Chief Executive Officer of Finchale on 1st June, following David Etheridge’s retirement.

Former soldier Mel, formerly Director of Business Development and Veterans’ Services at Finchale, also takes over responsibility for the North East Veterans’ Network as part of his role.
