Now into its 8th year the Soldiering On Awards are delighted to announce Nominations are Open for members of the armed forces community and the general public to put forward the people, teams, charities and businesses they would like to see recognised in the prestigious 2018 Soldiering On Awards. We are delighted to announce our new partnership with X-Forces to bring you three new business awards. All former members of the Armed Forces Community are eligible for nomination in the business awards categories.

Hospital home helps aged veterans in the local community

Last year, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) which cares for physically disabled ex-Servicemen and women, was awarded a grant from the Aged Veterans Fund to provide free physiotherapy sessions to veterans aged over 65 living in the local area. For the first time, QAHH was able to open its doors to non-residents at weekends, to help those veterans who need physiotherapy to stay as mobile and active as possible. The sessions, provided free of charge by The Chancellor using LIBOR Funds, were held on Saturdays when the Physiotherapy department is usually closed, and over the last year has welcomed 68 veterans aged between 66 and 96 years old.

The Royal British Legion launches Battle of Passchendaele virtual reality content with Dan Snow

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War Battle of Passchendaele (also known as the Third Battle of Ypres), The Royal British Legion has partnered with historian Dan Snow to create a series of unique and immersive virtual reality videos, from the experiences of those on the front line to nurses battling to treat the flood of casualties.

The videos invite viewers to travel back to 1917 and live life on the Frontline through first-hand audio accounts, diary excerpts, archive film and photos. It is available for the public to experience online for free via the Legion’s website and YouTube channel.

Poppies on the Prom comes to Mablethorpe

Mablethorpe Central Promenade will become a hub of activity on Sunday 13th August thanks to the Poppies on the Prom event.

Set to raise money for The Royal British Legion’s Mablethorpe Poppy Appeal, the summer time event welcomes visitors to enjoy an array of entertainment throughout the day. This includes a Battle of Britain fly past, Second World War Bake Off, tug of war, beach games, military vehicles and much more.

Corporal Gunga Gurung, veteran of the Borneo and Malaya conflicts, has a new photo to hang in the earthquake-resistant home we’ve built for him. Corporal Gunga Gurung, veteran of the Borneo and Malaya conflicts, has a new photo to hang in the earthquake-resistant home we’ve built for him.

After Gunga and his brother Kul featured in our recent article, one of our supporters recognised him from his time in the Army. The British Officer had served with Gunga in Malaya in the late 1960s and was kind enough to share their platoon’s group photo with us.

Media Invitation – Passchendaele Parade to provide a poignant reminder

Thousands of people from across the country are set to descend on the town of Crieff this Sunday (30th July) ahead of a poignant parade and service to mark the 100-year commemoration of the Battle of Passchendaele – a conflict that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Allied soldiers.

The national event, which will launch the wider ‘Crieff Remembers’ fortnight and is being supported by Armed Forces charity Legion Scotland, will begin at 10:30am with a parade through the town featuring more than 150 veterans along with serving soldiers from The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

Legion care home breaks world record with human poppy

Royal British Legion care home, Galanos House, has beaten a current Guinness World Record by creating the world’s largest human flower, forming the shape of the Legion poppy of course!

Located in South Warwickshire, Galanos House has celebrated its 50th anniversary by inviting its residents, staff, volunteers, families and the local community to be part of history by creating a giant human poppy.

Participants included local schools, Legion branches, the Women’s Institute, the Scouting movement and many others, came together at the Southam College to beat the current record of 2297 participants.

Commemorative Somme Poppy Run

Once again, a group of King’s Lynn park runners made the pilgrimage to the Somme area of France to commemorate the infamous Battle of the Somme by running the length of the Northern front line in aid of the Royal British Legion. The run was organised by Gary Walker, Secretary of the Sedgeford and District Branch who is also a Run Director for the King’s Lynn parkrun, whose members he canvassed to join him.

On Tuesday 25th July The Royal British Legion will be taking over the Household Cavalry Museum in Whitehall, alongside Dan Snow to launch the content.

Dunkirk the movie partners with Contact

Dunkirk opens as 400,000 British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. George Wagner was one of those young men and after decades of burying the memory of his experience, he opened up to Gemma Morgan (Former Army Captain, Kosovo) and Louis Nethercott (Former Royal Marine Commando, Afghanistan) in the Contact short Film Dunkirk Today.

Alongside Warner Brothers, Contact has produced the short film Dunkirk Today which highlights the similarities and differences across the past 77 years of conflict.
