FiMT and LGA release second edition of ‘Our Community – Our Covenant’ report

The second edition of the ‘Our Community – Our Covenant’ report was released on 26 June, commissioned by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) working in partnership with the Local Government Association (LGA) to identify further ways to improve the local delivery of the Government’s Armed Forces Covenant.

The Second Edition is based on follow-on research that was undertaken after the release of the first report in July 2016, also carried out by Shared Intelligence. This includes a refined self-assessment toolkit, a greater focus on the London boroughs, and a report on progress since the original report was published.

Keeping military families connected

The Royal Naval Association (RNA) has kindly donated Apple iPads to the Navy veterans and partners who live at The Royal Star & Garter Homes. The donation was funded by the Aged Veterans Fund and named Project Semaphore: an initiative set up by the RNA to improve communications for aged Naval veterans.

The custom built 16GB iPad Airs were presented in bespoke RNA-branded protective cases and came pre-loaded with relevant apps. Sarah Clewes, Deputy Project Manager for Project Semaphore, visited the Homes to meet the veterans and give them their computer tablets.

New Forces in Mind Trust Report: Optimising the infrastructure in place to support the needs of veterans in Northern Ireland

A new report examining the support and service provision to the veteran population in Northern Ireland (NI), funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), was released today, 23 June 2017, by Ulster University. The report calls for the infrastructure in place to support veterans in NI to be better embedded in policy-making and statutory service delivery networks.

‘Supporting and Serving Military Veterans in Northern Ireland’ is the first output of the Northern Ireland Veterans’ Health and Wellbeing Study (NIVHWS); a large scale study into the health and wellbeing of NI veterans.

RNA and Naval Associations Biennial Parade – 10 September 2017

The RNA / Naval Associations Biennial Parade will be held at Whitehall on Sunday 10 September 2017. The Second Sea Lord, Vice Admiral Jonathon Woodcock OBE has confirmed as the Guest of Honour and the VIP party will include the Minister for the Armed Forces, Rt Hon Mike Penning MP, Flick Drummond MP, (Portsmouth South), Captain Andy Jordan ADC Royal Navy, Commanding Officer HMS Collingwood and Mrs Gillian Molyneux and her daughter Bethany, Mrs Molyneux is the widow of Lt Cdr Dean Molyneux who was killed whilst serving in HMS Astute.

Army Veteran celebrates re-opening Fulham café

The Veterans’ Kitchen at Stoll on the Fulham Road is re-opening today after a facelift selling a great range of breakfasts, salt beef bagels and summer snacks. The café is run solely by Stoll Veterans giving people a chance to gain new skills and training when they leave the Armed Forces.

The Veterans’ Kitchen is run by Army Veteran Ian Camps who served in Northern Ireland and in Cyprus. When he left the Forces he became homeless before getting a home to rent with Stoll in West London. He then re-trained as a chef and now leads a team of staff and volunteers at the café.

Combat Stress Trustee receives MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours

It was announced on Friday that Colonel Robert Ward, Trustee for Combat Stress, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for voluntary services to the veteran community.

The Queen’s birthday honours list recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK. Colonel Robert Ward, a Trustee, supporter and former Honorary Treasurer for Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, was awarded an MBE for his commitment to veterans’ mental health.

Forces in Mind Trust releases next Call to Mind Review in the UK Series: Findings from the Review of Veterans’ and their Families’ mental health needs in Northern Ireland

A new report outlining changes and challenges to mental health services for veterans in Northern Ireland, funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), was released on 23 June 2017, and has identified that there is a need for greater support for veterans with mental and related health and social care problems from statutory services.

The review explores statutory mental health services for veterans, taking into account the sensitive issues within the context of the country’s complex history, current political landscape, and impact of equality legislation.

New Regional Fundraiser joins Poppyscotland team

Poppyscotland is delighted to announce the arrival of a new Regional Fundraiser for its welfare centre in Inverness. Frances Beveridge joins a team going from strength to strength since the centre opened its doors four years ago.

In her role, Frances will develop, implement and grow supporter-led fundraising within the region. A critical aspect of the job is to support the volunteer Poppy Appeal Area Organisers to maximise their local appeal totals and Frances will also be working to maximise the potential of the schools fundraising strategy and promote and enable supporter participation in large-scale national events.
