Understanding the employment challenges and barriers faced by Service leavers over the age of 50+

The Officers Association is undertaking a national research project with FiMT to investigate the employment challenges and barriers faced by Servicemen and Servicewomen of all ranks aged 50 or over at the point of discharge from the UK Armed Forces. The Centre for Research into the Older Workforce (CROW) is conducting the research on behalf of the Officers’ Association and FiMT are funding the project.

Individuals from within this demographic are invited to participate in a series of focus groups and an online survey.

The research findings will be widely circulated and the MOD will be provided with the research recommendations. The project has received ethical approval from the Faculty of Business, Law and Politics at the University of Hull and the MOD’s Research Ethics Committee.

  • The research covers all ranks and Services. We want those who will turn 50 by the time of their discharge to take part as well as veterans who are already aged 50+.
  • If you fall within this demographic, please register your interest here https://www.over50serviceleavers.org.uk/.
  • This research has been funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), using an endowment awarded by the Big Lottery Fund.
