Seafarers UK – Chair of the Board

***THIS JOB VACANCY HAS NOW CLOSED***

Seafarers UK is looking for a new Chair of the Board

We are a successful maritime charity. We’ve been supporting seafarers and their families for over one hundred years. We recognise that seafarers face supreme challenges including risk, separation and job security. We have a vision for a strong and resilient seafaring community which builds on our existing work and will address new challenges.

We’ll achieve our vision through our leadership role in the maritime charity sector and by funding well considered expert delivery partners to provide services and activities which meet the needs of our seafarers. We support all aspects of the seafarer’s voyage, throughout their lifespan. We have an exceptionally strong grants team and we’re building our fundraising team to meet the demands of the twenty-first century.

The organisation is undergoing a period of change, following the appointment of a new CEO in August 2019, and needs a strong strategic Chair to lead it into the next phase of its development.

The Chair will contribute well informed views, constructively challenge and actively deliver best practice. We would expect management skills at a senior level, an understanding of the needs of seafarers, knowledge of strategy and great communication skills.

Other information:

The position of Chair of Trustees is voluntary and unpaid. Meetings are based at Seafarers UK’s office in London.

Board members are expected to attend around three meetings a year, which last 2-3 hours and are currently held at 11am on a week day. In addition, trustees act as advisers to staff leads on specific projects. Additional committee meetings held three times year allow the board to focus in more depth. Of these committee meetings the Chair would normally expect to attend the Finance and Investment committee meeting and the Governance committee meeting. The Chair will represent our charity at events and meetings.

Induction into the organisation, training about Seafarers UK as well as about the role of Chair, and reimbursed travel costs are available for all Trustees.

The Chair of Trustees will be recruited through a competitive process which is confirmed by the Membership at the Annual General Meeting (usually May time).

Seafarers UK will give you:

  • Induction, training and reimbursable expenses
  • Opportunities to network with senior professionals
  • Opportunities to make strategic decisions and develop new skills
  • Influence to shape the future of Seafarers UK
  • The chance to improve the health and well-being of our seafaring community

The expected time commitment is three trustee meetings, attendance at committee meetings and regular catch-up meetings (face to face or remotely) with the chief executive.

Closing date: 29 February 2020

Interviews: 23 March 2020 in London
