Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton OBE becomes Ambassador for bereaved children’s military charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers

Sergeant Major Glenn Haughton OBE has served in the Armed Forces for over 30 years and is dedicated to supporting the military community. Now he has taken on the role of ambassador for bereaved Forces children’s charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, showing his commitment to supporting the children of our fallen heroes.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers was founded in 2010 by war widow Nikki Scott, a year after her husband, Corporal Lee Scott, was killed in action. Nikki saw the devastating impact on their two young children and wanted to help others in the same situation.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers arranges for bereaved Forces families to go on respite breaks, organises special events, sends presents to the children at extra difficult times of year, offers wellbeing care, as well as educational support and grants. Being part of the Scotty community reminds hundreds of bereaved Forces children they aren’t alone.

After joining the Army in 1988, Glenn went on to gain deep operational experience from multiple tours in Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as serving all over the world. In 2015 WO1 Haughton was appointed by the Chief of the General Staff (CGS) to become the first British Army Sergeant Major. Then in 2018 he became the first Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chiefs of Staff Committee (SEAC).

Glenn is also the Armed Forces Mental Health and Wellbeing Champion and he supports a number of military charities. He is a keen supporter of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, committed to ensuring the children servicemen and women have left behind are cared for throughout their childhood. He has previously filmed an episode of On The Scotty Couch, which is available to view on Scotty’s Little Soldiers’ YouTube Channel, ‘Scotty’s TV’. He is also a big fan of the Fear Naught clothing range by Scotty’s Little Soldiers, with 100% of the profits going to the charity to help support bereaved British Forces children.

Glenn’s first role since becoming an ambassador for Scotty’s is fronting The Scotty Challenge, which is part of the November to Remember campaign where the charity wants to encourage people to take the time to think about the people who have lost lives in service. For anyone who has lost their hero, Remembrance is every day, but November is a time for us all to reflect.

The Scotty Challenge is a high endurance workout that can be done in memory of those who lost their lives fighting for our country, and in support of their children left behind. It goes live from 1st November, but many people are planning to take on the challenge over Remembrance weekend, in honour of our fallen heroes. Participants are encouraged to post their time to add a competitive element.

Sgt Major Glenn Haughton said:

“I am extremely proud to become an Ambassador for Scottys Little Soldiers. I love what the charity stands for. Having been on many operations and having seen the effect the loss of a loved one can have on our families and in this particular case our children, I know how much Scotty’s will mean to each and every child and family member that it helps”.

Glenn added:

“The Scotty Challenge has been designed in a way that anyone can attempt it. It’s a tough challenge, a challenge that will test you physically and mentally and it’s a challenge that is befitting of our fallen heroes whose children have sadly been left behind. Just remember that your participation, your determination and your sweat and effort will go some way to supporting our bereaved Service children.”

Nikki Scott, Founder of Scotty’s Little Soldiers said:

Glenn has been a supporter of Scotty’s for some time now, so it’s great to officially have him on board. A lot of the children we support feel they lose their connection with the military community after the death of their loved one, so to have Glenn, with over 30 years military service, working closely with us, means so much.”
