This new partnership will provide 588 free of charge swimming lessons to 49 local children, covering Pre-School to Stage 4 as part of Swim Free’s mission to create confident, capable swimmers across the UK.
The programme being delivered in partnership with Places Leisure, the parent company of Gosport Leisure Centre, is designed to give young people a strong foundation in water safety and swimming skills in a fun, supportive environment.
Swim Free provides free swimming lessons for children and young people from Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary families. The initiative is funded by Greenwich Hospital and delivered in partnership with the Andrew Simpson Foundation. Learning to swim is an essential life skill for young people, but also supports and helps them maintain positive mental health, grow their confidence, resilience and willingness to try new things – all while keeping active.
“We are delighted to be providing free swimming lessons to young people from the Gosport Royal Navy community, in partnership with Places Leisure.
“Learning to swim is an essential life skill for all young people to learn, and particularly prevalent for those growing up in and around costal environments.
“We know there are a significant number of Navy families in the Gosport area, and the addition of this location will allow even more families locally to access the Swim Free programme.” – Sam Weeks, Swim Free Outreach Manager.
Swim Free swimming lessons are delivered by governing body qualified swimming instructors, aligned to the Swim England or Scottish Swimming Learn To Swim pathway, with a clear focus on progression, engagement, and individual support.
“We are excited to be involved in this collaboration, and we look forward to bringing together the armed forces community and the wider public together to create a more inclusive and supportive community for all.” – Adam Fawcett, Gosport Leisure Centre
