VOS welcomes Major Peter Norton GC, George Cross recipient as new VOS Patron

Veterans Outreach Support (VOS) are incredibly proud to welcome Major Peter Norton GC, a highly decorated retired British Army officer as our new Patron.

He served in the Royal Logistic Corps as an Ammunition Technical Officer, dedicating over 30 years to the British Armed Forces, during which he served in various global locations including Northern Ireland, Germany, Oman and Iraq.

In July 2005, while serving as second-in-command of the US-led Combined Explosives Exploitation Cell (CEXC) in Baghdad, he was severely injured by a secondary improvised explosive device (IED) while investigating a deadly attack. Despite life-changing injuries, including to his legs, arms and lower abdomen. he directed follow-up actions and ensured the safety of his team, before evacuation.

For his exceptional bravery, leadership and courage, he was awarded the George Cross, the highest medal for bravery with the enemy not present, in 2006.  He was also awarded the FBI Star in 2009, and the United States Army Commendation Award.

Other honours include the Thornton Medal by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining in 2013, and an Honorary Doctorate by Canterbury Christ Church University in 2017.

Ian Millen, VOS CEO said:

“We are absolutely delighted that Major Peter Norton GC has joined VOS as a Patron. His commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of veterans aligns perfectly with VOS’s mission, and his presence brings immense inspiration and credibility to our work supporting the veteran community.”

Major Peter Norton said:

“I am honoured and delighted to join Veterans Outreach Support as a Patron, and to assist however I can. As someone with a rewarding military career spanning over three decades, I can relate to the issues that face most service personnel.

“Further, as a 13-year disabled veteran myself, I bring another dimension to that experience. I have seen the ever-present need for effective provision of welfare support and wellbeing services, with the need for charitable action as a constant. I look forward to supporting VOS in its very worthy endeavours.”
