A generous donation for Sussex military charity

Worthing-based charity, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) has received a grant of £50,000 from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity.

The extremely generous donation will go towards the cost of providing rehabilitation services to disabled Army veterans and their dependents who live at QAHH, over the next 12 months.

QAHH has been caring for disabled veterans since it was first established in 1919, and with no regular government funding, the charity must raise over £1.3 million each year to maintain its nursing and rehabilitation services for ex-Service personnel.

How to Celebrate Red, White and Blue Day

Red, White and Blue Day is a national fundraising campaign for schools that raises money in support of the RAF Benevolent Fund, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. The money raised is split between the three long-established charities which all have close ties with our Armed Forces.

This year’s campaign will take place on Friday 6 October, with thousands of school children across the UK dressing up in red, white and blue in support of the men and women of the Armed Forces.

Opening of the RBLI Invictus and Victory Houses

Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon gave a speech and officially opened Victory and Invictus Games Houses built by the Royal British Legion Industries.

‘I Married a Soldier’

Brenda Hale, our Charity Ambassador, is now a published author! ‘’I Married a Soldier’ follows Brenda’s experience of losing her husband, Captain Mark Hale, whilst he was serving with 2 RIFLES in Afghanistan on the 13th August 2009.

Mark’s unit had been providing security for a meeting of local leaders in Sangin and searching a mosque for ammunition, when a soldier triggered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).

The Spinnaker Tower Abseil, which has been fantastically organised by our Home Counties office since 2013, is just one of the extreme events that ABF The Soldiers’ Charity offers. Soaring 170 metres above Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent, the Emirates Spinnaker Tower is taller than the London Eye, Blackpool Tower and Big Ben, and has already established itself as a national icon for Britain.

Salvation through sailing: Steven Price Brown’s Riddle of the Waves

Steven Price Brown first became known to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity in 2015, through a meeting with inspirational charity Turn to Starboard. Turn to Starboard is a registered charity based in Falmouth Marina in Cornwall, using sail training to support Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations. At the time of our first meeting, Steven was preparing to embark on the Charity’s inaugural Round Britain Challenge alongside a crew of fellow veterans, all of whom had been through unimaginably traumatic experiences while serving their country.

TV adaptation of Robert Galbraith’s novel ‘Strike – The Cuckoo’s Calling’ launches on BBC1

Last Sunday, 27th August, marks the airing of the debut episode in the Cormoran Strike series with “The Cuckoo’s Calling”, at 9pm on BBC1. The adaptation of Robert Galbraith’s 2013 novel has created a buzz of anticipation with the viewings expected to be sky-high.

One of ABF The Soliders’ Charity’s beneficiaries, Barney Gillespie, acted as a consultant on the show for the lead role, Cormoran Strike, played by actor Tom Burke. Burke, who was a judge for The Soldiers’ Charity Photo competition this year, plays Afghanistan veteran turned Private Investigator who is exploring a botched murder.

SSAFA secures £287,000 in funding from The Soldiers’ Charity

In July 2017, our Charity awarded a grant of £287,000 toward SSAFA’s Casework service and Forcesline during 2017.

SSAFA’s Casework service provides much-needed welfare advice and support for our soldiers and veterans. Our grant will help with the training of SSAFA’s network of 4,000 caseworker volunteers who meet with potential beneficiaries to find out what help they need and offer support.

The Official Cateran Yomp video is here!

More than 1,150 walkers took part in this year’s Cateran Yomp, the 24-hour 54-mile trek across the Highlands of Perthshire, all to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity. Despite challenging weather conditions, this year’s Yomp saw the most participants ever in the seven years it has been running, with the highest amount ever – 499 – completing the Gold Route.
