Architect from Norfolk to take on London Marathon for military charity

A man from Norfolk is taking on the London Marathon this April for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Tim, a partner at a Cambridge architecture firm, is a lifelong walking enthusiast, though admits that his interest had to take a backseat as domesticity and raising his children caught up with him. He says: “I’ve always enjoyed doing long distance walks but those things soon disappear when you start having children. Now, the children are getting to the age where they’re more independent, so I’ve been in contact with some old school friends and we’ve been rekindling our love for the outdoors!”

Blind veteran’s Granddaughter from Salisbury to take on London Marathon for military charity

A woman from Salisbury is taking on the London Marathon this April for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Marie Manning, 38 and originally from Llanfairfechan, Wales, will be running the world famous course on behalf of the charity which has supported her Grandfather, Hywel, since last May. She says: “He’s a blind veteran himself and lives in North Wales, and as a result has received so much support from the charity’s Llandudno Centre. They’ve basically given him another life. Without them, he’d be massively restricted in terms of where he could go.”

Longest serving blind veteran recognised after 75 years’ support from Blind Veterans UK

A 97 year old blind veteran from Sussex was recognised on Friday (10/03) as it was 75 years to the day that he started receiving support from St Dunstan’s, now known as Blind Veterans UK.

Norman Perry, who now lives at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Ovingdean, is the longest serving beneficiary of the charity alive today and one of the longest of all time.

Blind veteran Simon Brown shortlisted in the prestigious Sunday Express ‘People’s Choice’ category at Soldiering On Awards 2017

An Iraq War veteran who was blinded in conflict has been shortlisted in the prestigious ‘People’s Choice’ category sponsored by the Sunday Express in the seventh annual Soldiering On Awards.

Simon Brown, 38 and from Leeds, was nominated for the award by national military charity Blind Veterans UK, which has supported him since he lost his sight.

A woman from Wrexham is preparing to take on a daunting 10km Chain Runner challenge, where contestants compete while chained to at least one other person, with the funds raised going to Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Susie Trow, mother of one, has been working with a personal trainer since October and one of her main objectives has been to set a series of three month goals.

Blind veteran from Lancashire to take on fastest zip line in the world for his 90th birthday

A blind veteran from Chorley, Lancashire is planning on celebrating his 90th birthday by traveling down Zip World Velocity in Bethesda, North-West Wales, the fastest zip line in the world, and the longest in Europe.

Bob Hill, currently 89, will be raising money for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, by flying down the world famous wire, on which pervious participants have been known to travel as fast as 100mph.

A blind veteran from Fareham, Hampshire has been invited to compete in the inaugural Holman Prize, a $25,000 prize that will enable the winner to fulfil a life ambition.

Penny Melville-Brown OBE, has been invited to compete for the prize as a result of the profile she has built for herself across the internet and social media. If victorious, she hopes to take her baking project, Baking Blind, global. She says: “My adventure is all about food, because it delights me! It’s also a universal language with the power to bring us all together.”

Contractor from Horsham to take on three marathons in three days

A woman from Horsham is preparing to compete in an incredible three marathons in three consecutive days, with half the money raised going to Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Sarah McCarthy, 50 and originally from East Grinstead, will be competing in the Jurassic Coast Challenge, a three day challenge beginning on March 24. The picturesque coastal route will see participants begin in Charmouth, before heading through to Weymouth, Portland and Lulworth Cove, ultimately finishing in Shell Bay.

Blind veteran from Rhyl receives prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Rhyl has been presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Brian McManus, 90, was presented with the prestigious honour at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno on Wednesday 1 March. The ceremony was attended by several members of Brian’s family including his daughter Linda and officiated by Steve Boswell, the charity’s Llandudno Centre Manager.

University lecturer from Chapel St Leonards to take on mammoth 100k challenge for military charity

A man from Chapel St Leonards is training to compete in a 100k walk across the Yorkshire Dales for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Jack Christian, 63, is a university lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, teaching business students on ethics and sustainability. It was due to what he describes as a strange sequence of events that he finds himself in preparation for the ultra-challenge.
