Another brilliant Troop Aid ball!

The atmosphere was electric when over 350 guests gathered at the National Conference Centre, home of the National Motorcycle Museum in Solihull for Troop Aid’s highest profile event of the year, the Annual Ball. A registered charity, Troop Aid’s patron is HRH The Prince of Wales.

All were greeted upon arrival by a guard of honour. From young Sea Cadets to current military personnel, from members of the Royal British Legion to a Chelsea Pensioner, the evening appealed to everyone who was keen to support the Midlands based charity that supports our injured service troops.

Mental Health First Aid is for everyone

You would probably know what to do if your colleague became physically ill. But would you know what to do if someone suffered from poor mental health?

Approximately 10 million work days are lost in the UK due to poor mental health, costing the UK economy around £100 billion each year. This problem is not restricted to the workplace as on average 3 children in every classroom have a mental health issue.

We at DMWS Training therefore believe that every workplace, including schools, should have a Mental Health First Aider as well as a physical First Aider.

New charity appointment aims to increase corporate and employee engagement in maritime

Mairéad Ní Cheóinín has been appointed to Seafarers UK as the charity’s new Corporate Fundraising Manager where her focus will be on engaging with the commercial maritime sector.

Mairéad brings a wealth of business development, marketing experience and industry knowledge to the position from her previous roles, working with Steamship Mutual P&I, TradeWinds, Informa PLC in London and the Irish Maritime Development Office in Dublin.

Mairéad joins the grant-giving, campaigning and fundraising charity at an exciting time, as it celebrates its Centenary and is looking ahead to the next phase of its future. Her role will be to raise awareness of Seafarers UK’s wider impact within the maritime charity sector.

New Forces in Mind Trust Award: Assessing Public Attitudes towards ex-Service Personnel in Northern Ireland via the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey (NILTS)

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) has awarded a grant of £31,500 to Ulster University, to produce a report on public attitudes towards ex-Service personnel in Northern Ireland.

Currently there is no evidence base which provides insight into how the general public view ex-Service personnel in the region. While work has been done to assess public attitudes towards policing in the years following the Good Friday Agreement, there is no equivalent for ex-Service personnel.

The report will be based on answers generated from the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey (NILTS), the largest public attitudes survey in NI, and covers a range of modules on community relations and attitude towards particular groups in the region.

Ministry of Defence and Royal Foundation launch new partnership to improve mental health

His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon will today (Monday) launch a new partnership to improve the mental health of current and former Armed Forces personnel.

The joint initiative between the MOD and the Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry builds on the MOD’s recently launched mental health and wellbeing strategy, which outlines how the department will improve the mental health of its serving military and civilian personnel, their families, and veterans.

It will see the Royal Foundation provide advice and resources to the MOD to improve training, education and information sharing for the entire Armed Forces. The work will include annual briefings, websites and specialist support to raise awareness of the importance of good mental health.
