WWII Pilot’s Granddaughter Running The London Marathon For Injured Service Personnel

Andrea Farrell, a broker in the Corporate Division of Lark Insurance who are one of The Not Forgotten Association’s major corporate supporters, is taking part in the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon to raise funds for the charity.

Explaining what inspired her to take on this challenge, Andrea said: “I became aware of the NFA’s work through my participation on the charity committee at Lark Group, as they are our company chosen charity.

New Gosport Home for Vulnerable Seafaring Veterans

Greenwich Hospital and Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans are launching an exciting new partnership in the historic Naval town of Gosport, Hampshire, providing accommodation for homeless Seafaring Veterans. The new project, Greenwich House will become residence for up to 8 homeless and vulnerable Veterans at any one time, allowing those in need to gain the support that they so urgently need.

With the first residents due to move in in June, work is already underway to get the home ready. As well as a beautiful new home, each Veteran will be provided with support to help them access healthcare, gain budgeting skills, find training and employment opportunities, and prepare to manage their own accommodation independently again in the future.

Blind veteran from Cumbria to receive prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Cumbria is to be formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

William Gerard Lackey, 96 and from Ulverston, will be presented with the prestigious honour by Philip Daniel, the Honorary French Consul of Liverpool, on behalf of French president Francois Hollande next week (19/04).

In Bradford, reporter Dave McCann has been filming veterans from the Skillforce charity who deliver courses to students. He’s also been investigating how the pupil premium works in a school in North Yorkshire.

Portsmouth Schools’ Cluster Visit HMS St Albans

School children from Portsmouth were treated to a very special day on board one of the Royal Navy’s frontline frigates in Portsmouth Navy Base.

The children, who all have parents who are serving members of the Armed Forces, got an exclusive tour around the Type 23 frigate HMS St Albans, which is nicknamed the ‘Saint’, before she continues her duties as the Fleet Ready Escort for the Royal Navy.

Giving John his freedom back

When living independently was starting to be too much for John, he got in touch with the Royal Air Forces Association, to see if there was any support available.

John served in the Royal Air Force from 1970 to 1977. He was an aerospace systems operator and served throughout the UK as well as in Malta, Cyprus and Belgium. After deciding to leave the RAF he moved abroad, instructing and training in Saudi Arabia, before meeting his wife and returning to the UK.

Through a brand new programme of work, Samaritans will be offering armed forces staff and their families tailor-made confidential support services round the clock, wherever they are in the world. We are looking for a Project Manager with recent exemplary service in the Armed Forces to work in collaboration with charities, agencies and academics to develop and implement a programme that helps military personnel, veterans and their loved ones identify when someone may need emotional support, and access Samaritans’ services more easily, whether they are in the UK or stationed overseas.
