OA to develop new training programme with BITC to help employers become military friendly

The Officers’ Association is developing a new training programme, in conjunction with Business in the Community (BITC), which aims to support businesses to develop sustainable military employment programmes.

The structured training will help employers to understand the benefits of hiring ex-military personnel. According to research by Deloitte, the OA and FIMT, 72% of organisations with active ex-military recruitment programmes recommend employing veterans; 53% of organisations that employ veterans find they are promoted more quickly than other colleagues and 79% find they take less sick leave.

Military Friendly Employers Share Career Top Tips

The first OA Employment Symposium of 2017 brought together leading military friendly employers and industry experts keen to share their insight with those currently in transition, or seeking a further career change since leaving the Armed Forces.

Hosted at York’s Network Rail Training Centre, this year’s event kicked off with a dedicated LinkedIn workshop to demonstrate how the social media platform is now essential for Service leavers in supporting their transition and next career move.

NHS Director challenges colleagues to recruit from the military

Ann McIntyre, Director of Workforce at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust (GSST), is challenging NHS managers to recruit people with more diverse backgrounds, including from the military.

She said that IT, HR, Engineering, Operational and Project Management are ideal departments for people with no healthcare experience.

Armed Forces Organisations Join Forces to Celebrate the Best in Business!

In 2016, RAF veteran Steve arrived for the first day of a Business Experience programme hoping to turn his part-time massage work into a business he could be proud of, Steve lost his vision in 2004.

Steve defines the character and values of our Armed Forces, he has never given up and has completed 10 triathlons since accepting his sight loss. He has never lost his entrepreneurial motivation and he was determined to become self-sufficient again professionally as well as physically.

How to Make it in The City – An Insider View from the Insurance World

The area around Lime St, where the Lloyds Building now stands, has been at the heart of financial commerce for centuries. It was on Lombard St, back in the late 1600s, where merchants and ship-owners would meet at Lloyds Coffee House to discuss maritime insurance, shipbroking and foreign trade. It didn’t take long for their informal convivial chat to be formalised and regulated. However, it’s unlikely they could ever have foreseen how they helped pave the way for the towering buildings that represent the epicentre of the financial services and insurance industry in the UK today.
