Old & Bold Battlefield Challenge 2017 – A Pilgrimage to Passchendaele

Alan Spencer, a severely disabled ex-serviceman and tenant of Haig Housing Trust, is attempting to hand cycle along with a couple of novice cyclists over a two day period the Battlefields and Monuments of the France & Flanders in honour of the sacrifice that our ancestors made.

As this year marks the centenary of the First World War battles of Arras, Messines Ridge, Passchendaele and Cambria, sometimes known as the Third Battle of Ypres, Alan felt it very important to do something to mark our respect for all those who took part in this battle, and by doing so, also assist those from recent conflicts who need our help and support today.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge

Three members of staff at Haig, are bravely taking on the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge includes the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough. These peaks form part of the Pennine range, and encircle the head of the valley of the River Ribble, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The challenge is a 24 mile walk, ascending to 5,200ft in under 12 hours.

Stoll recommit to honour the Armed Forces Covenant with Chief of Defence People visit

The Chief of Defence People, Lieutenant General Richard Nugee CVO CBE, has visited Stoll to meet beneficiaries of the charity. He had a tour of Stoll’s Fulham site which is home to over 150 Veterans and the centre of a large number of charities offering services to Veterans. General Nugee was at Stoll to witness the charity recommit to honour the Armed Forces Covenant and support the Armed Forces Community.

Finding your home on Civvy Street: research coming soon!

Housing Options Scotland (HOS) is a housing charity with almost 20 years of experience helping disabled people find the right house in the right place. In 2012 the organisation created a pilot project called “Military Matters” which aimed to give housing advice and support to disabled veterans in Scotland, or those who wished to return or relocate to Scotland. Through the life of the Military Matters project, HOS has also carried out housing briefs, created publications and given advice and support to all veterans, those in transition and those currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Personal Reflections of The Falklands War

On 16 March, at St John’s Place Lower Bemerton Salisbury, the Wiltshire Alabaré Ambassadors held a fundraising evening entitled “Personal Reflections from the Falklands War and its Aftermath”. Overall nearly 120 were present and in excess of £2,500 was raised for Alabaré.

The official guests were the Mayor of Salisbury, Derek Brown OBE, Brigadier Hodder, CEO of the Wessex Reserve Forces Cadets Association, Wing Commander Vincent Thomas, Second in Command at Boscombe Down and Major Richard Rimmington MBE, Royal Logistic Corp. The major sponsors were the Mark Allen Group, Chemring Countermeasures and Our Wilton.

Stoll runs free English classes for Gurkha Veteran community in Hounslow

Stoll is offering free ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) classes to support its Gurkha residents and their families improve their English and engage more confidently with the wider community. The first pilot course is currently running at Stoll’s Countess of Wessex House for two hours a week for 12 weeks and will come to an end in April.

Alabaré – Research Launch at The House of Commons

A report published today looks beneath the headlines of increasing homelessness in the UK, to understand the problems facing a small, but significant minority of Armed Forces Veterans who are ending up on our streets.

The report “Research into the housing-related support needs of homeless veterans” looks at what makes some ex-Armed Forces personnel more susceptible to homelessness than the vast majority who make a successful transition to civilian life, and how organisations can best meet their needs.

The Veterans’ Nomination Scheme: addressing the urgent need for housing

As part of Stoll’s blog series, this month they hear from Julian Coates, the scheme’s project manager. Julian has worked in social care for 22 years and has been with Stoll since October 2012.

The Veterans’ Nomination Scheme works in partnership with housing associations, local authorities and other Veterans’ charities to match accommodation with Veterans in need of housing. It is funded by the Royal British Legion.
