Blind veteran from Staffordshire receives medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Staffordshire has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Rowland Edwards, 93 and from Stafford, will be formally presented with the prestigious honour by Monsieur Jean-Claude Lafontaine from the French Consulate in a special ceremony at the National Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. The ceremony, which was organised by military charity Blind Veterans UK, will be attended by Rowland’s family as well as representatives from the charity.

A woman from Doncaster is training to take on a 100 kilometre walk across the Yorkshire Dales for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Tracy Ford, 38, will be embarking on the challenge for the second time, having previously taken part last year in what was the challenge’s inaugural year.

Dover veteran to take on 100 km challenge for military charity

A man from Dover is training to complete the 100 kilometre walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Berni Jenkins, 45 and born in Portsmouth, is aiming to complete the daunting course in under 30 hours, and is hoping to raise £1,000 for the charity.

A charity roadshow hosted by national military charity Blind Veterans UK and supported by Music in Hospitals is bringing a live music event to National Service and Armed Forces veterans in Great Yarmouth.

Military charity unveils new anti-gravity treadmill purchased after blind veteran raised £15,000 with 100km walk

A new anti-gravity treadmill has been unveiled by military charity Blind Veterans UK after a blind veteran raised £15,000 towards its purchase.

Rifleman Paul Jacobs GM, 27, from Brighton who completely lost his sight whilst on operations in Afghanistan, raised the money by tackling Blind Veterans UK’s inaugural 100km challenge over the Yorkshire Dales in June last year.

Blind Veterans UK supports GP training days to improve understanding of veterans’ health

National military charity Blind Veterans UK is involved in an innovative joint project supporting Health Education England in delivering a series of half day and full day training sessions on veterans’ healthcare for GPs across England.

Blind Veterans UK, which provides free services and support for all veterans, no matter when they served and how they lost their sight, was approached to take part in the programme which launched in 2015 and delivered its first training event of 2017 this week in Lancaster

Lieutenant General Sir Gary Coward appointed as Chairman of SSAFA

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, announces Lieutenant General Sir Gary Coward KBE CB as newly appointed Chairman of Council.

Sir Gary was initially commissioned into the Royal Artillery, serving in Germany and Northern Ireland. He trained as a pilot in 1978 serving in Germany, Hong Kong, Brunei and the UK, transferring to the Army Air Corps in 1983. As a Staff Officer, he has held posts on the British Army Staff in Washington, the Directorate of Army Aviation, the UN Protection Force in Sarajevo and the Chiefs of Staff Secretariat in the MOD. He commanded C Flight AAC in Brunei, 656 Squadron AAC in the UK and 1 Regiment AAC in Germany and the Balkans.
