Supporters across the UK are preparing to take part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out, Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE)’s flagship fundraising campaign, proudly sponsored by BAE Systems and Barratt Redrow. Each March, participants give up one night, or more, of comfort to raise awareness and vital funds for veterans facing homelessness.
From gardens and workplaces to community spaces, Scout huts, military heritage sites and wild outdoor locations, people of all ages will take their mission outside to shine a light on an issue affecting thousands of former service personnel.
Billy Billingham MBE fronts the 2026 campaign
Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE) is proud to announce that Billy Billingham MBE, former SAS Sergeant Major and Chief Instructor on Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins, fronts The Great Tommy Sleep Out ad campaign for 2026.
Lisa Farmer OBE, Chief Executive of RBVE, said:
“Billy Billingham is standing alongside veterans who are facing the unthinkable after serving their country, and we encourage others to follow suit. One night outside can’t replicate that reality, but it can start conversations, shift attitudes, and raise the vital funds that provide safe homes, mental health support and a route back to independence. I’d urge everyone to choose a night in March and join the mission so no veteran is left behind.”
A simple act with powerful impact
One night in the cold highlights the harsh reality many veterans endure.
Every Sleep Out sparks conversations, builds understanding, and — alongside fundraising — drives real, lasting change.
Participants choose their own location, rally support from friends, family, colleagues or their wider community, and take part in a way that suits them. Some sleep out alone, others join as families, youth groups, workplaces or veteran communities. Many add their own twist, from long‑distance hikes to multi‑night challenges, themed camps or educational activities.
Why the Sleep Out matters
Too many veterans struggle with the transition to civilian life.
Some face mental health challenges, unemployment, or unstable housing — and without support, these difficulties can escalate quickly.
RBVE works to break that cycle by providing:
- Safe, stable homes
- Specialist mental health support
- Employment and training opportunities
- A supportive community built around dignity and independence
RBVE’s village in Kent is already home to more than 300 veterans and their families, offering a lifeline to those rebuilding their lives. Funds raised through The Great Tommy Sleep Out help RBVE expand this support even further, ensuring no veteran is left behind.
A growing national movement
Last year, more than 14,000 people took part — and 2026 is set to be the biggest year yet.
Participants include:
- Veterans and serving families
- Schools, colleges and youth groups
- Businesses and community organisations
- Outdoor enthusiasts and first‑time campers
- Families taking part together
Each Sleep Out, no matter how big or small, contributes to a nationwide effort to support Britain’s bravest.
