Walking With The Wounded funding announcement

Greenwich Hospital has awarded £45,000 to Walking With The Wounded (WWTW) to provide ongoing, community-based support for approximately 100 Royal Navy veterans across the North East, North West, and Midlands.

The grant will complement existing funding from Greenwich Hospital and the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, and further support WWTW’s established programmes, delivering mental health, employment, and wraparound care coordination support to veterans transitioning from military to civilian life.

The funding will ensure Royal Navy veterans who require ongoing support post-service can access tailored interventions that support wellbeing, stability, and long-term independence.

The programme aims to:

  • Support veterans requiring welfare assistance after transitioning to civilian life.
  • Improve and sustain good mental health and wellbeing.
  • Enhance transition outcomes, including helping veterans secure and sustain employment.

Monitoring and evaluation are central to WWTW programme delivery and includes wellbeing measurements at the start and end of participants’ engagement, as well as six- and 12-month follow-up assessments. Participants will complete self-report evaluations, and qualitative evidence as records of progress.

Employment outcomes will also be tracked, with the number of Royal Navy veterans securing and sustaining employment recorded as part of the programme’s impact assessment.

Deirdre Mills, Director, Greenwich Hospital said:

“Greenwich Hospital is supporting WWTW in delivering vital mental health, employment, and welfare support to Royal Navy veterans. This grant reflects our ongoing commitment to improving wellbeing and life chances for those transitioning from Royal Navy service into civilian life, ensuring veterans can access timely, community-based support where it is most needed.”

Tony Hulton, WWTW CEO, added:

“Our community-based programmes are at the absolute heart of what WWTW does, standing alongside and supporting veterans who have fallen the furthest and are experiencing significant physical, mental or social challenges on their path back to civilian life.

“This funding allows us to support around former Royal Navy personnel through those community-based programmes. It allows us to be there when we are needed, at any time, to keep them moving forward. We are proud to work alongside Greenwich Hospital to make a lasting difference for the Royal Navy veteran community.”
