A blind veteran from Cumbria who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, has met The Countess of Wessex, who this year became the charity’s Patron.

Darren Blanks, 30 and from Egremont, met Her Royal Highness at the charity’s show garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The garden, titled ‘It’s all about community’, was one of three show gardens to receive a prestigious gold medal.

Blind veteran gardener from Newtown to be featured in military charity’s Hampton Court show garden

A blind veteran from Newtown who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

Andy Rae, 77 and originally from Hackney, has made a miniature garden for the flower show, titled Garden Towers, which won the award for the Most Creative Miniature Garden at the charity’s recent gardening week held at their training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

A blind veteran from Wigan who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

Dennis Clements, 92 and from Orrell, has made a miniature garden for the flower show, titled The Relaxation Garden, which won the award for the ‘Best in Show Miniature Garden at the charity’s recent gardening week held at their training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

A blind veteran from South Gloucestershire who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

David Thomas, 88 and from Chipping Sodbury, will be making his own miniature garden that will appear in the main garden as part of a special week of activities for blind veterans with green fingers held at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

London team to take on mammoth 100k challenge for military charity

A group of colleagues and a friend from London are training to compete in a 100km walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

The team includes Ian McPherson, 63, Debbie Stewart, 47, Ruaidhri Magee, 42, and Franceska Tunde, 33. Ian, Debbie and Ruaidhri all work at the Single Source Regulations Office (SSRO). Franceska works at Capital One.

A blind veteran from Liverpool who has received vital support from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, will be contributing to the charity’s show garden at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show this July.

Roy Sinton, 92 and from Formby, will be supplying the fuchsias to the garden through Sintons’ Nurseries, the company he founded. He’ll also be making a miniature gardens for the flower show as part of a special week of gardening activities for blind veterans with green fingers held at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno.

Cumbria blind veteran to tackle third 100km ultra-challenge walk for military charity

A blind veteran who battled a brain tumour and two bouts of meningitis is set to tackle a third 100km ultra-challenge walk for the military charity who supports him.

Darren Blanks, 30, and a father-of-two from Egremont, hopes to walk from London to Brighton in 15 hours this weekend for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

He jokes: “I completed the 100k London to Brighton in 25 hours in 2014, but I blame sitting in the pub for too long. I want to get a faster time this year and reckon I can do the 100k in under 15 hours.”

99 year-old blind veteran receives prestigious World War II medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Gloucester has been formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Odre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Arthur Parish, 99 and from Brockworth, was presented with the honour by Lt Col Andrew Tabor, High Sheriff of Gloucester, at the Millbrook Lodge Care Centre.

Arthur says: “It really is very nice to have this recognition, especially after all of these years. I really wasn’t expecting anything like this, not at my age.

Celebrate Brighton Armed Forces Day at Blind Veterans UK

Local military charity Blind Veterans UK is hosting Brighton’s Armed Forces Day celebrations this year. The charity, which supports vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, is bringing together Service charities and organisations in the area giving a platform to showcase the work they do within our community.

The special event, which will be on Sunday 25 June, is being supported by some fantastic local talent including DJ and compère Mark Wintle as well as celebrity guests Johnny Ball and Chris Ellison.
