A Sales Executive from Malvern is training to complete a 100 kilometre walk in the Yorkshire dales for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.
Alex Woosman, 21 and from Shrewsbury, will be competing in the event, which takes place from 23 – 24 June, with his father, John. He explains: “I saw the advert and thought it looked like a great challenge and a fantastic way to raise money for charity.

James Hatton, 27 and from South Shields, was on the lookout for a new way to physically challenge himself when he came across the trek, which takes place from 23 – 24 June around the Dales. He explains: “You name it, I’ve done it! I’ve completed a 10,000ft freefall solo skydive, a bungee jump, several half marathons and even walked over hot coals!
“That’s the kind of person I am. I like to set myself new goals to achieve, new targets to smash and, hopefully, new causes to support!”

Chris Garwood, 47, will be attempting the ultra-challenge for the third year in a row. Chris completed 72km in his first year, despite not having trained, but was unfortunately unable to finish due to injuries sustained to his feet. Last year, after saying he would never do it again, he once again found himself at the starting line. He recalls: “Even though I didn’t finish in 2016, I was still incredibly happy with what I’d achieved. 72km is an awfully big distance and not a lot of people can say they’ve walked it in one go!

Alexandra Newton-Cox, 33 and from Halesowen, will be attempting the mammoth challenge for the second time, having first taken part in 2017. Despite not training, Alexandra still managed to walk an incredible 87km, while also raising over £600 for the charity. This year, she explains that she’s already started her training and is determined to finish. She says: “You really push your body to the limits. Even now, just the thought of doing it again makes me nervous. My hips are already aching and my stomach is doing flips. Don’t even get me started on the blisters!

Mike, his wife Jo and his brother-in-law Giles Barnes set up the run in 2009 but tragically Mike collapsed and died while doing the run himself in 2013. Now with Jo’s blessing the event returns in 2018, the 74th anniversary of the D-Day landings, to continue its important fundraising work, with the three chosen charities being Blesma, The Limbless Veterans, Blind Veterans UK and Combat Stress.
