Read moreSteven Price Brown first became known to ABF The Soldiers’ Charity in 2015, through a meeting with inspirational charity Turn to Starboard. Turn to Starboard is a registered charity based in Falmouth Marina in Cornwall, using sail training to support Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations. At the time of our first meeting, Steven was preparing to embark on the Charity’s inaugural Round Britain Challenge alongside a crew of fellow veterans, all of whom had been through unimaginably traumatic experiences while serving their country.

One of ABF The Soliders’ Charity’s beneficiaries, Barney Gillespie, acted as a consultant on the show for the lead role, Cormoran Strike, played by actor Tom Burke. Burke, who was a judge for The Soldiers’ Charity Photo competition this year, plays Afghanistan veteran turned Private Investigator who is exploring a botched murder.

Read moreA grant of £3,000 has been awarded to the Army Families Federation (AFF) by the Forces in Mind Trust, to hold a research symposium in partnership with King’s Centre for Military Research this November, at the Victory Services Club, London.
Following the success of the event in 2015, AFF had planned to hold a second symposium in June this year. However, due to the terrorist attack that took place around London Bridge the weekend before the symposium, the event was postponed. Without additional funding, it would not have been possible to re-schedule the symposium for the foreseeable future.

Read moreA cyclist from Conwy is preparing to cycle 325 miles for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.
Goronwy ‘Gron’ Edwards, 67 and from Llandudno, will be cycling from the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Brighton to its Llandudno counterpart. The ride, which will begin on 29 August, will take six days.
The ride will be done on a recumbent bike, something Gron admits may not be winning him any fashion points in the near future. That being said, he remains bullish about its functional properties, something he maintains will be key over the course of the five days.

SSAFA’s Casework service provides much-needed welfare advice and support for our soldiers and veterans. Our grant will help with the training of SSAFA’s network of 4,000 caseworker volunteers who meet with potential beneficiaries to find out what help they need and offer support.
