Blind veteran from Liverpool receives prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A blind veteran from Liverpool has been formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Roy Sinton, 92 and from Formby, was presented with the prestigious honour in front of friends and family in Llandudno, North Wales by French Honorary Consul, Mrs Aude Auclair. The ceremony was arranged and organised by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, from whom Roy receives support.

Queen’s Birthday Honours – local man recognised for international contribution to RAF Association’s charity work

Barry Furness, of Fareham, Hampshire, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours awards in recognition of his work for the Royal Air Forces Association –the charity that provides welfare support to the RAF family.

Nick Bunting, Secretary General of the Association said, “Since 1974, Barry has worked ceaselessly to promote the aims of the Royal Air Forces Association and in doing so has reached a huge variety of people. His remarkable drive, infectious enthusiasm and strong leadership, in posts from the bottom to the top of the Association, have inspired those he has reached and greatly strengthened support for the Association, locally and nationally and abroad.”

Combat Stress Trustee receives MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours

It was announced on Friday that Colonel Robert Ward, Trustee for Combat Stress, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for voluntary services to the veteran community.

The Queen’s birthday honours list recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK. Colonel Robert Ward, a Trustee, supporter and former Honorary Treasurer for Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, was awarded an MBE for his commitment to veterans’ mental health.

Charity CEO Nicky Murdoch recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list published on 16 June 2017, on the occasion of Her Majesty’s official 91st birthday, recognises the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people right across the United Kingdom. This year, the St John and Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) Chief Executive Nicky Murdoch is awarded an MBE for service to the Armed Forces Community and their families.

Nicky Murdoch completed a 30 year career in the Army where she specialised in personnel work. After her own battle with Breast Cancer in 2007, Nicky moved to the voluntary sector to utilise her skills, knowledge and awareness of the issues facing our Armed Forces when in hospital. She joined DMWS in 2011 to develop and expand the service.

Blind veteran from Churchill to receive prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Churchill is to be formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Peter Johnson, 91 and from Churchill, will be presented with the prestigious honour by Josette Lebrat, the Honorary French Consul of Bristol, on behalf of French President Emmanuel Macron. The special ceremony will take place at a reunion lunch held in Bristol and organised by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, from whom Peter receives support.

Soldiering On Awards announces new President and Vice President

LONDON 31 May 2017 – The Soldiering On Awards today announced the appointment of General the Lord Dannatt GCB, CBE, MC, DL, and Debra Allcock-Tyler, CEO the Directory of Social Change, as President and Vice President respectively.

They are the charity’s first executive members outside of the Board of Trustees and staff. Their responsibilities will include advising the Board on strategic direction as the charity enters its eighth year of service.

Stoll founder and Dame Barbara Windsor honoured

Sir Oswald Stoll, a renowned theatre impresario, commissioned the building of the Hackney Empire 115 years ago. Fifteen years later, Sir Oswald set up Stoll when he saw the desperate need for support and housing for vulnerable Veterans returning from World War One. Today and a century on, Stoll provides 259 homes with holistic support for ex-Service men and women across London and the South East, with another 34 homes currently being built in Aldershot.
