Charity CEO Nicky Murdoch recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list published on 16 June 2017, on the occasion of Her Majesty’s official 91st birthday, recognises the achievements of a wide range of extraordinary people right across the United Kingdom. This year, the St John and Red Cross Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) Chief Executive Nicky Murdoch is awarded an MBE for service to the Armed Forces Community and their families.

Nicky Murdoch completed a 30 year career in the Army where she specialised in personnel work. After her own battle with Breast Cancer in 2007, Nicky moved to the voluntary sector to utilise her skills, knowledge and awareness of the issues facing our Armed Forces when in hospital. She joined DMWS in 2011 to develop and expand the service.

Local pub supports military charity with a month of fundraising

The Fox Inn, Patching has chosen to support the Worthing-based Queen Alexandra Hospital Home in July.

The month-long fundraising initiative takes place throughout July, and includes in-house collections and a pub quiz!

The quiz will take place at The Fox, Arundel Road, Patching on Tuesday 18 July at 6.30pm. It costs £5 per person to enter, and this includes a cone of chips per person. On the night, there will also be a raffle and other games for you to participate in.

poppyscotland Inverness opens door for Armed Forces Day

This year’s Armed Forces Day is on Saturday, and, to mark the special occasion, Poppyscotland’s Inverness Welfare Centre is hosting an open day on Friday in recognition of the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community in Scotland.

The event, which runs from 11:30am to 3pm, is open to all serving or former members of the Armed Forces in the north of Scotland, including Reservists and family members, and aims to bring people together in an informal setting to learn more about what support is available and how to access it. There is also the opportunity to join the Legion Scotland Inverness Breakfast Club at 10am that same morning.

RAF Association hosts annual remembrance service at the National Memorial Arboretum

Beloved members of the RAF who have given their lives for their country were remembered by relatives and friends on Friday 16 June 2017 when The Royal Air Forces Association held its annual remembrance service.

The ceremony at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire gave around 300 family members, friends and colleagues the opportunity to commemorate the lives of relatives and ancestors who lost their lives, some of whom have no grave or last resting place.

All the fun of the fayre, in aid of disabled veterans

There will be bunting galore on Boundary Road, Worthing on Saturday 8 July, as The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) opens its doors to the public for its Summer Fayre!

The charity’s annual event is held to raise money for the local Hospital Home, which cares for disabled ex-Servicemen and women. QAHH strives to improve the mobility and independence of its residents through rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social and recreation activities.

RAF Association opens new community hub in the heart of Preston – and presents WWII veteran with his medals during the opening ceremony

A WWII veteran was finally presented with medals he earned from the campaign, 72 years after leaving the RAF. The medal ceremony for Albert Pemberton-Sheen formed part of the formal launch of the RAF Association’s new Wings Centre, on Fishergate, Preston, on Tuesday 6 June 2017. As well as Albert, guests of honour included the mayor of Preston and the secretary general of the Royal Air Forces Association.

Lincolnshire to gain four new Camaraderie Clubs thanks to Legion Funding

Four new Camaraderie Clubs, run by the Royal Voluntary Service Lincolnshire, are set to open this year as a result of funding from The Royal British Legion.

The four new social clubs, known as Camaraderie Clubs, will see around 140 older veterans being offered the opportunity to attend a weekly club in a safe, friendly and open environment. Run by ex-service volunteers, with approximately 40 volunteers set to be in place, three clubs have already opened in Sleaford, Grantham and Coningsby, while one more is set to be established by the end of the year in Spalding.
