Burma Star Memorial Fund – support needed for Remembrance Project

The Burma Star Memorial Fund is embarking on an exciting new Remembrance Project and needs some help. It plans to set up an online ‘Remembrance Book’ which will include as many of the veterans of the ‘Burma Campaign’ as possible. To start the process it wants to have all the application forms of the members, past and present, of The Burma Star Association, approximately 56,000, digitalised to form a database for this project.

So what is needed is someone who is able to input the information on the application forms quickly and accurately on to a computer.

19th April – Sanctions, Support & Service Leavers: Social security benefits, welfare conditionality and transitions from military to civilian life

This event presents the first-wave findings of an ongoing longitudinal project funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) called Sanctions, Support and Service Leavers: Welfare conditionality and transitions from military to civilian life. This ground breaking project represents the first substantive research focusing specifically on veterans’ experiences of the social security benefits system in their transition to civilian life.

Make a difference by walking the distance

Worthing-based charity, Care for Veterans, which provides care and rehabilitation to disabled ex-Service personnel, is looking for participants to take part in a sponsored walking event in May.
Just Walk, on Saturday 12 May, is a unique challenge event at Goodwood Racecourse, where you can raise money for Care for Veterans and take on a personal challenge at the same time. You can choose to walk either 10km, 20km, 30km, 40km or the big 60km – pick the one that suits you best!

All aboard for launch of new charity racing team

An expanding sailing charity for injured veterans has unveiled its plan to move into the world of competitive racing.

In partnership with Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, Turn to Starboard will launch a new racing division in May from a new office at Haslar Marina in Gosport.

The Cornwall-based charity was set up three years ago and believes sailing has a therapeutic effect on those affected by military operations.

Engineering Manager from Lincolnshire to walk 200km for military charity

An Engineering Manager from Lincolnshire is training to complete two 100 kilometre walks for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Stacey Whitworth, 44 and from Louth, will first be competing in the 100k Yorkshire, his second with the charity, on June 23-24. Shortly after that, on July 7- 8, Stacey will then be taking part in the 100k London to Brighton, his fourth with the charity.

Stacey explains that the original decision to take part in the events came from his own sight loss. He says: “In 2013 I was involved in an industrial accident where a machine blade went through my left eye.

New FiMT Award: seAp awarded funds to evaluate their Military Advocacy Service

Forces in Mind Trust has awarded funds of £126,872 to seAp, a charity that provides free advocacy services, to conduct a three-year evaluation of their Military Advocacy Service.

Initially a pilot scheme in Oxfordshire in 2013, the service was founded through seAp’s statutory mental health advocacy work, where they encountered ex-Service personnel who felt unable to access statutory services to meet their specific needs.

Help for Heroes fund Stoll to help rebuild the lives of wounded London veterans

Military charity Help for Heroes is providing a grant of £246,000 to Stoll, the leading provider of supported housing to Veterans, to enable more wounded, injured and sick veterans living in London to rebuild their lives and empower them to make a positive impact in society.

The three-year partnership will enable two Stoll members of staff to act as the operational arm of Help for Heroes and provide outreach services to wounded, injured and sick veterans. Help for Heroes currently run four Recovery Centres across the UK; Tedworth House in Wiltshire, Chavasse House VC in Colchester, Phoenix House in Catterick and The Naval Service Recovery Centre at HMS Drake, Plymouth.

Support for ex-Forces – funding boost for North East

Durham based charity Finchale, which supports veterans and their families from the North East has received a grant of more than £100,000 to continue its valuable work in the community.

The grant comes from ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the British Army’s national charity, and will provide support to 70 Ex-forces personnel from across the region.

In addition to helping with the cost of staffing, the grant will go towards providing individualised, professional case management that will enable veterans from the North East to access support in areas such as personal finance, housing, relationships, mental and physical health, training and education, whilst learning the necessary skills to get back into employment.

Join local military charity for Easter family fun

Blind Veterans UK, a local charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, is inviting local residents to join them for an afternoon of Easter-themed family fun.

The event, Easter Family Fun, will involve a range of Easter-themed art activities, including cake decorating and a blindfolded woodland egg-chime trail, giving participants the chance to win a basket of exciting Easter-themed prizes. It will take place from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday 31 March at the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno, North Wales.
