New Military Veterans Training for Peace (PEP)

Peace is more than the Absence of War. For some, peace of mind is not found so easily. We have training in order to prepare for war, but the Peace Education Programme (PEP) offers a different kind of training – how to prepare for peace!

Updates from the Forces Welfare Media Team

The Forces Welfare Media Team has been in the South West, finding out how the RFEA has helped a former Royal Marine into a rewarding civilian job with a demolition firm in Plymouth.

They’ve also filmed with two charities that have been helped by grants from the Royal British Legion. The team joined veterans and servicemen and women leaving the forces as they learned building and decorating skills with Building Heroes and braved chilly Cornish waters for a day at the beach with Surf Action and a group of forces families.

Playwright from Mold to host illustrated talk for military charity

A playwright from Mold is set to host an illustrated talk on Soldier Poets of the First World War, with the proceeds going to Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Micheal Stevens will be hosting the event on Monday 8 May at Mold Library, with the poetry being read out by a selection of actors. As a writer, he’s had plenty of experience in putting on similarly theatrical events. He says: “I mostly specialise in plays that are rooted in our local community, for instance the Mold Riots of 1869.

AFF Research Symposium: secure your place

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is to host a Research Symposium on Monday 5 June, following the success of their first symposium back in 2015.

The event, a collaboration between academics, subject matter experts, AFF and the MOD, will focus on the issues Army families face with the aim of further research being developed and a better understanding of this cohort.

First bricks laid on new Veterans’ housing in Aldershot

Armed Forces Veterans have laid the first bricks at Stoll’s new development in Aldershot. Stoll, the leading provider of Veterans’ housing and support, is building 34 new homes for vulnerable and disabled Veterans to rent. The new homes are being built on the site of the former care home on the edge of a nature reserve in suburban Aldershot to address the housing shortage faced by the nation’s ex-Service men and women. The new homes will be available to rent from March 2018.

Student from Abergele to climb Snowden blindfolded to support sight loss charity

An occupational therapy student from Abergele is preparing to climb Wales’ highest peak, Snowden, while completely blindfolded to raise awareness for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Izzy Jones, 19 and currently studying in York, will be embarking on the challenge on Sunday June 4.

Sussex military charity appoints new Chief Executive

The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) in Worthing, West Sussex, is delighted to announce the appointment of Andrew Neaves as Chief Executive from 19 July 2017.

Andrew brings a wealth of leadership experience having served a full career in the military. His last post was as the Assistant Director of Defence Rehabilitation at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, Headley Court. This role involved the strategic planning for the delivery of rehabilitation across the United Kingdom, overseas bases, and for both military and humanitarian operations.

Expanding Durham charity welcomes new staff

Durham based charity Finchale has announced a raft of new appointments to support its ambitious growth plans in the North East. The independent charity, which was originally founded in 1943 as a rehabilitation and resettlement centre for service personnel returning from active service, provides health, training and employment opportunities for people excluded and isolated due to multiple disadvantages.
