Stoll founder and Dame Barbara Windsor honoured

Sir Oswald Stoll, a renowned theatre impresario, commissioned the building of the Hackney Empire 115 years ago. Fifteen years later, Sir Oswald set up Stoll when he saw the desperate need for support and housing for vulnerable Veterans returning from World War One. Today and a century on, Stoll provides 259 homes with holistic support for ex-Service men and women across London and the South East, with another 34 homes currently being built in Aldershot.

 Soldiers to cycle 1,500 miles in first-ever charity ‘Tour de Troops’ 

Twenty bomb disposal experts from the British Army are preparing to cover 1,500 miles by bike to raise funds for Felix Fund – the charity for those affected by Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD).

Switching blast suits for Lycra, the cyclists will begin their ride from Edinburgh to Bielefeld in Germany on June 12th and average about 100 miles per day. In just 15 days, they will visit every security-cleared EOD regiment in the first-ever Tour de Troops.

Prosthetic company Opcare raising money for limbless veterans’ charity with 145-mile bike ride

Employees of prosthetic provider Opcare will be completing a variety of cycling challenges on Friday 9 June to raise money for military charity Blesma, The Limbless Veterans.

The route options vary from just over 20 miles around Richmond Park in south west London, to the most gruelling challenge of cycling from Roehampton Limb Centre, London to the company’s head office in Birmingham 145 miles away in just one day. Some riders will join for the final 14-mile loop around Birmingham.

Blind veteran able to rediscover passion for museums with help of Durham volunteer

A blind veteran from Durham has been able to reignite his interest in museums with the help of a volunteer from Durham.

Michael Gray, 73 has been visiting various museums since January with Robin Trounson, a volunteer from Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Robin says: “Michael likes museums but unfortunately his enthusiasm is not shared by his family, so he rarely gets the chance to visit them!

Deptherapy team herald most successful training programme yet

A team from scuba diving rehabilitation charity Deptherapy has recently returned from their largest ever and most successful programme yet.

14 wounded in service veterans, all suffering from life changing mental and/or physical injuries, took part in the Deptherapy programme in May at Roots Red Sea, El Quseir, Egypt.

Six veterans successfully completed the PADI Open Water course with five of these continuing on to qualify as PADI Advanced Open Water Divers during the week.

Blind veteran from Hampshire reaches finals of the prestigious Holman Prize

A blind veteran from Hampshire who has been invited to compete in the inaugural Holman Prize has reached the final round.

Penny Melville-Brown OBE, from Fareham, has been selected as one of the 11 finalists from over 200 original entries. Run by the San Francisco Lighthouse organisation, three winners will be awarded $25,000 to achieve their ambitions. Penny’s goal is to cook across six continents with her online Baking Project, Baking Blind.

Wrens Walking Wales – an inspirational idea from WO1 Barbara McGregor RN, who persuaded WO1 Annette Penfold MBE RNR (Command Maritime Services), former CPO Wren Radar Annie Lagrue and L/Wren Radio Operator Larraine Cox to join her in walking 100 miles in 9 consecutive days from Newport, Pembs on 13th May, ending at HMS CAMBRIA RNR Unit, Sully, Cardiff on May 21st.
