New Armed Forces charities sector leadership programme awards 22 fellowships

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), established to help ex-Service personnel and their families make a successful transition back to civilian life, Cobseo, The Confederation of Service Charities and Clore Social Leadership are delighted to announce details of the 22 successful emerging leaders who will take part in ‘Clore6: Cobseo’, a new leadership development programme for the Service charities sector.

The participants come from a wide variety of charities and include: Glen Art, Housing Options Scotland, the Naval Families Federation, Stoll and the Royal British Legion. All participants will have the opportunity to utilise their applied learnings in team challenges to immediately transfer the skills they gain from the programme back into their organisations.

SSAFA Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire & Kent to support local councils with Forces Connect South East project

Financed by the Ministry of Defence’s Armed Forces Covenant Fund, the project aims to increase understanding of the Armed Forces community within Local Authorities

In May, Surrey County Council, in partnership with Kent, East & West Sussex and Hampshire county councils was awarded £321,000 from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund to promote understanding and awareness within public authorities and related sectors, including health, of the issues which affect the Armed Forces Community. It also aims to strengthen local government delivery of the Covenant in the South East.

New academic role for Veterans Aid CEO

CEO of Veterans Aid Dr Hugh Milroy has been appointed Visiting Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine at King’s College London’s Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN).

He said, “I am proud and delighted to have what has been a long ‘informal’ relationship with King’s formalised in this way. Students are our future and I hope that by working with them we can open minds and challenge some of the orthodox thinking about veterans that leads to so much harmful stereotyping.”

UK charity seeks out British Korean War veterans for international education film project

The Legasee Educational Trust Links up with the Korean War Legacy Foundation for Educational Project Covering Three Continents

The Legasee Educational Trust is looking for Korean War Veterans from across the UK to come forward and share their experiences of the often forgotten conflict for a major new oral history project that will see British contributors added to the Korean War Legacy Foundation’s international digital memorial archive.

The New York-based Korean War Legacy Foundation, Inc. (KWLF) has sponsored the Legasee Educational Trust to film the oral accounts of British Korean War Veterans for their digital memorial, which hosts around 800 in-depth interviews with Korean War vets and 6,000 historical artefacts related to the conflict.

100km walked in aid of SSAFA

Twelve members of RACPD donned their walking boots over the weekend of 16/17 June to take part in a sponsored walk in aid of SSAFA. The 100km was split into 4 x 25 km stages which began in Warminster taking the northern range road across Salisbury Plain to Tidworth, back along the southern range road to the start and all completed within a 24 hour period.

Scottish children’s Forces show heads for Edinburgh Fringe

This is My Life commissioned by RCET, Scotland’s Armed Forces Children’s Charity, has been invited to perform this year for the first time at the Edinburgh Fringe as part of a new cutting-edge performance programme which explores aspects of army life.

This is My Life will be part of a new 6-piece drama, dance and music showcase called Army@TheFringe (being run in association with Summerhall). The shows will take place from 11 to 26 August at the Hepburn House Army Reserve Centre, in East Claremont Street, which will be transformed into a temporary performance space staffed by serving soldiers.

Launch of the Service Children’s Progression Alliance’s mission

Launch of new national partnership of organisations focussed on improving outcomes for children from military families. The Service Children’s Progression (SCiP) Alliance’s mission is to champion the progression of the children of military personnel so that they can make informed and confident transitions through further and higher education into thriving adult lives and careers. Conference delegates from service charities, local authorities, schools, colleges, universities and policy makers discussed the key messages.
