Read moreThe new team managing the Gurkha Services project at SSAFA is now in place. The initiative is funded by money from the Libor banking fines. Their aim is to work with all SSAFA local branches and divisions, where there is a Gurkha community, to share best practice and useful information and provide relevant training – ultimately to improve the provisions in place for Gurkhas and their families.
More information: According to the Gurkha Welfare Trust, there are an estimated 12,794 retired Gurkha’s settled in the UK with their families. Our experience shows that Gurkha veterans have complex needs, including many who are elderly and infirm with low literacy levels.

The Hub is expected to be up and running by the end of the year and will be a one-stop shop offering help to veterans with health, welfare, housing, social and employment issues.
Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, attended the launch and pledged £5,000 to the Hub from his Homelessness Fund.
His fund is supporting efforts to prevent veteran homelessness, and at the launch he said it was unacceptable that those who have served the country were sleeping rough.

The fundraiser, held at Bicton College in East Budleigh, was aimed at raising awareness and vital funds for HighGround, a charity who provide jobs, careers and vocational opportunities for Service Leavers, Reservists and Veterans in the land-based sector.
Hosted by Bicton College, HighGround runs a series of Rural Weeks throughout the year which provide candidates with seminars and tasters of Rural Careers. HighGround plan to deliver 8 Rural Weeks during 2018 that will support over 80 individuals.
