Tyne and Wear veteran to take on the Fan Dance Race for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

A local Navy veteran is taking on the ultimate SAS selection challenge to raise money for the charities that have supported him after being diagnosed with PTSD.

John Mew, 60, from Dinnington in Newcastle is taking part in the gruelling 24km Fan Dance Race, which sees participants run over the highest mountain in the Brecon Beacons, Pen Y Fen, not just once – but twice.

John served in the Royal Navy for 12 years as a physical training instructor, ships diver and as a member of the Portsmouth Command Field Gun Crew.

Volunteers needed to make Aberdeen Poppy Day a day to remember

It was a fun event that captured the imagination of the city in 2017, but organisers of this year’s Aberdeen Poppy Day are already hard at work behind the scenes to make it even bigger and better this time around. And to boost this worthwhile event further, they are sending out a plea in the hope of recruiting more volunteers.

Matt Fyfe, who is the Poppyscotland Area Organiser for Aberdeen, said: “We have a great team of volunteers here in Aberdeen, but we need a few more willing individuals or groups to come forward to lend a hand on the day.

Military Charity Blesma, The Limbless Veterans seek people for fundraising week

A military charity that supports veterans and serving personnel who have lost limbs, or the use of limbs, are looking for people across the UK to sign up to Blesma Week and hold a fundraising event in their local area.

Blesma Week kicks off on Monday 28 May and will include two bucket collections at Canary Wharf and Kings Cross Underground stations. During the week of fundraising and awareness-raising, communities and companies all over the UK (and even overseas) are encouraged to get involved in a Blesma event or organise their own fundraising activity.

Parachute Regiment Corporal runs Amazon Ultra-Marathon for Support our Paras

In June, Colchester based 3 PARA Cpl Antony ‘Herbie’ Hyde will be taking on the Amazon rainforest in a bid to raise £10,000 for his regimental charity Support our Paras.

Cpl Hyde has signed up to take part in the Jungle Ultra Marathon, which will see him travel 230km in just 7 days. The course in the Manu National Park, deep in the Amazon rainforest, Peru, runs from the Andes mountains to the Madre di Dios river, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees during the day and then dropping to 10 degrees at night.

Scotland’s state band comes to Kilmarnock

Scotland’s best-known military band, which is in the midst of its first-ever national tour, is all set to perform in Kilmarnock after receiving a warm welcome today from the Provost.

The Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland is performing at seven venues across the country as part of its “Walking with Heroes” centenary tour which is aiming to raise tens of thousands of pounds for leading Armed Forces charity Poppyscotland.

Scotland’s State Band, as it is also known, will be performing at the Kilmarnock Grand Hall on June 15th, but, earlier today, members of the Band local to the area joined East Ayrshire Provost Jim Todd and the Poppyscotland team to spread the word about the eagerly anticipated concert.

Give Us Time attends Charity Walk For Peace 2018!

Give Us Time’s Managing Director was delighted to attend this year’s Walk For Peace in the gorgeous Windsor Great Park on Sunday 29th April 2018. Rupert, along with the other participants walked five miles raising money for great causes including Give Us Time.

Walk For Peace has been happening every year for the last twenty-eight years and in the past five has raised over £1.3 million which has been distributed to 136 local, national and mayoral charities.

Overall the day was a great success and even the weather behaved – for the most part!

Brighton blind veteran joins 130 others in Royal Marines zip wire

A blind veteran from Brighton took on a great challenge by riding a Royal Marines zip wire and descending 120 feet from the top of Blind Veterans UK’s iconic building in Ovingdean earlier in April (21-22/04).

Tony Harbour, who turns 83 in June, was joined by 130 other daredevils, including blind veterans supported by the charity, in taking part in the challenge which has seen nearly £12,000 raised and pledged so far.

Tony says: “This is my third year taking part in the zip wire challenge and the atmosphere was absolutely brilliant yet again. The fear soon turned into exhilaration as the adrenalin kicked in and I sped 30mph towards the ground.”
