MHFA England interviews DMWS Training

Mark Perryman, Training Manager for DMWS Training has recently been interviewed by Mental Health First Aid England on his path from being a member of the Armed Forces, to becoming a Welfare Officer at DMWS and for the last 3 years delivering DMWS Training, including MHFA courses to internal staff and external organisations. He said: “When we deliver MHFA we try to bust myths – like ‘everyone who serves leaves with a mental illness’, or ‘there’s no support for mental health in the military’.”

As the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) celebrates its 75th year of supporting the Armed Forces community, the charity continues to innovate the welfare profession.

Annington Trust supports SSAFA’s 2018 Short Breaks provision for serving military families

SSAFA is delighted to announce that the Annington Trust has awarded a grant of £6,000 to support SSAFA’s new Short Breaks provision in 2018. The grant will enable SSAFA to offer places on the breaks at a reduced cost to families who have a child with an additional need and/or disability.

Two weekend-long breaks will be available in spring and winter for up to 90 family members. SSAFA will work in partnership with the Calvert Trust, Exmoor which offers a safe and supportive environment specifically designed for those with physical, learning, behavioural and sensory disabilities.

SSAFA Mentoring Service awarded NCVO Accreditation

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has been awarded an accreditation from the NCVO(1) for its mentoring service, which supports and empowers veterans during their transition back to civilian life.

The NCVO Approved Provider Standard (APS) recognised the exceptional work of the mentoring service including its practices in management and operation, the processes for identifying service leavers in need, support of volunteer mentors and the results achieved through the service.

HRH The Duke of Kent visits the Centre for Veterans’ Health, King Edward VII’s Hospital 

His Royal Highness, The Duke of Kent visited the recently opened Centre for Veterans’ Health at King Edward VII’s Hospital.

He was able to talk to the veterans taking part in the Pain Management Programme, meet the clinicians who run the Programme, the administrative team, and the researchers.

Surrey veteran to take on 100km challenge for military charity

A veteran from Surrey is currently training to compete in a 100km walk from London to Brighton for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Chris Butler, 46 and from Merstham, has been a volunteer for the charity for several years, helping as a guide in a number of events including the 100K London to Brighton in 2016 and the Blind Veterans UK Ski Club trip to Italy in 2015. He also took part in both the 100K London to Brighton and Ride for Life events in 2017, the latter of which he’ll be doing again this year, alongside the 100km challenge.

New Directors appointed by FiMT

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), established to help ex-Service personnel and their families make a successful and sustainable transition back to civilian life, has appointed five new Directors to its Board: Ross Campbell, Anaїs Reding, Nick Roberts, Robert Robson and Andrew Ward.

Ross Campbell is the Director, Public Sector at the Institute of Chartered Accountants England and Wales (ICAEW) where he leads the Institute’s work to improve standards in the management of the Public Finances, both in the UK and internationally.

The Not Forgotten Association is thrilled to announce that they will be collaborating with The Ideal Home Show as their Official Charity Partner at Olympia, London between 17th March and 2nd April.

Our volunteers will be on duty throughout the show, full of information about those they help and all the events and activities we offer. We will also have a stall, manned by their fantastic team, ready to greet you throughout the show and there will be plenty of opportunity to meet some of those we support.

27 beneficiaries are hitting the slopes in Breckenridge, Colorado

From 21st February – 2nd March and 3rd – 11th March, a total of 27 beneficiaries – hailing from 16 difference units of the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force – will be skiing in Breckenridge, Colorado. Split into two groups, week one will include Hari Budha Magar, a former Gurkha who is attempting to become the first above-knee, double amputee to summit Mt Everest. It will also include two sets of twins; two sisters from the Royal Artillery and two brothers from the RAF Regiment and Royal Marines.

Fantastic £5000 donation from The Jive Aces

Long-time supporters of the NFA, The Jive Aces, raised an astonishing £5000 for the Association through their record-breaking Summertime Swing concert in August 2017. Chief Executive James Stopford was thrilled to be presented with the cheque, at the NFA HQ in Victoria, by nearly the whole band. We are thrilled that this year’s Summertime Swing will once again be raising money for The NFA.

Armed Forces Covenant Awards £20,000 Grant to Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans Wales

Alabaré, the charity behind Homes for Veterans England and Wales, are delighted to have been awarded £20,000 towards costs of our Homes for Veterans Wales from the Armed Forces Covenant.

Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans Wales offers support to ex-Service men and women across Wales who have left active service and who are experiencing difficulty adapting to civilian life. These former service personnel are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless, usually due to lack of support network and social isolation after discharge.
