Officers’ Association Sponsors Inter-Services Triathlon

The Officers’ Association (OA) is proud to sponsor the Inter-Services Triathlon for a second, consecutive year.

Organised this year by the RAF Triathlon Association, the Army, Navy and RAF will compete at the annual event in the end of July. There are individual and team categories, including Male, Female and Veteran. In addition to the Armed Forces, the Emergency Services and the OA will each enter guest teams to compete.

The first OA Employment Symposium of 2017 brought together leading military friendly employers and industry experts keen to share their insight with those currently in transition, or seeking a further career change since leaving the Armed Forces.

Hosted at York’s Network Rail Training Centre, this year’s event kicked off with a dedicated LinkedIn workshop to demonstrate how the social media platform is now essential for Service leavers in supporting their transition and next career move.

Ann McIntyre, Director of Workforce at Guy’s and St Thomas’s NHS Foundation Trust (GSST), is challenging NHS managers to recruit people with more diverse backgrounds, including from the military.

She said that IT, HR, Engineering, Operational and Project Management are ideal departments for people with no healthcare experience.

Veteran’s 75th Wedding Anniversary Surprise

The Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) organised for the wife of a 97 year old veteran to make a surprise visit to him in a Manchester hospital to celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary.

When DMWS Welfare Officer Karen Daniels met Mr Middleton for the first time in a Manchester Hospital in May 2017, he felt very low as he was missing his wife to whom he had been married for 75 years that month. The couple were hospitalised around the same time with health issues but had been living at home together independently prior to their admission.

Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team raises £70,000 at Charity Auction

Each year the Armed Forces Para-Snowsport Team (AFPST) works hard to fundraise to ensure that all of our fantastic athletes get the support they need. This year, we held a brilliant Snowball and Charity Auction, which saw performances from Laura Wright and the Band of the Scots Guards, as well as a powerful speech from Kate Philp, an Army veteran.

We would like to thank all those that supported the event, and those that contributed so generously to the Charity Auction. We raised £70,000 that evening and are so grateful to all those who attended. In particular our thanks goes to Allen & Overy who provided such a great venue.

New medical clinic to serve Gurkha community

The Gurkha Welfare Trust offers a high standard of free medical care in Nepal. We deliver this through our 21 offices across the country, our dedicated mobile medical team and by paying for treatment at trusted hospitals.

The world-class facilities at the new Pokhara clinic form the latest step in our ongoing efforts to provide the highest possible standard of care for Gurkhas veterans and their families. In Pokhara alone, we see an average of 27 patients each day.

Forces in Mind Trust’s final Common issues in meeting the mental and related health needs of veterans and their families

A new report providing the first UK-wide summary of the mental and related health and social care needs of veterans and their family members and provision of support services, funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), was released today, 5th July 2017.

The report, entitled Call to Mind: United Kingdom – Common Themes and Findings from the Reviews of Veterans’ and their Families’ Mental and Related Health Needs in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, was presented to the Ministry of Defence and Department of Health UK Partnership Board to formally launch this final summary. It draws together the key issues and findings from the series of four Call to Mind reports for England, Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, all of which were completed between 2015 and 2017.

AFF achieves housing success on behalf of Army families

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is celebrating a success for those living in Service Family Accommodation (SFA) who have recently faced unfair increases to their accommodation charge.

Many families contacted AFF to say their rental charge or final charge had unexpectedly increased by an unreasonable amount without proper notice and without a chance to appeal.
