SSAFA Health Visitor appointed to World Health Organisation role

Kerry Riley, SSAFA Health Visitor for Episkopi Cyprus and Kenya BATUK, has been delivering excellent health care support for SSAFA since March 2017. Her passion is seeing the difference that her work makes to the military community on a daily basis.

After seeing and applying for a new role being advertised, Cyprus-based Kerry has recently also been appointed as Public Health Technical Advisor for the World Health Organisation for a part-time role. This will entail promoting new guidance whilst also running alongside her current vital work with SSAFA.

Openreach go above and beyond for SSAFA veteran in need

Since striking up their partnership in 2015, Britain’s digital network business Openreach have raised nearly £100k for SSAFA, the UK’s oldest Armed Forces charity.

Graham Barnard, Openreach employee goes beyond the call of duty:
Dougie is a 92 year old veteran living in Southend, who has always been very proud of his appearance and has a bountiful collection of shoes and clothes. He lives in a warden controlled studio flat, so space is a premium and, up until recently, he didn’t have any bedroom furniture to store his clothing in. The lack of storage meant that Dougie’s flat was very cluttered, which made his home a trip hazard for him.

New Gurkha Services team up and running

The new team managing the Gurkha Services project at SSAFA is now in place. The initiative is funded by money from the Libor banking fines. Their aim is to work with all SSAFA local branches and divisions, where there is a Gurkha community, to share best practice and useful information and provide relevant training – ultimately to improve the provisions in place for Gurkhas and their families.

More information: According to the Gurkha Welfare Trust, there are an estimated 12,794 retired Gurkha’s settled in the UK with their families. Our experience shows that Gurkha veterans have complex needs, including many who are elderly and infirm with low literacy levels.

Wednesday 6 December – Perth Christmas Concert

St John’s Kirk of Perth will be getting into the Christmas spirit by holding a concert on Wednesday 6 December to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

More information: Performers will include the Kirk Choir and Organist, the Military Wives Choir from Leuchars base in Fife, an Ensemble of the Highland Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, well-known Olivier award winning actress Lesley Mackie, as well as local dignitaries, including Brigadier Mel Jameson CBE- the Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross, and Branch President, the local Regiment -51st Highland, 7th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland, the Black Watch Association and many SSAFA volunteers.

Saturday 11 November – Bishop Auckland Remembrance Service

A Remembrance Service will be held by the Durham Branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity at St Andrews Church War Memorial in Bishop Auckland.

More information: The service will be conducted by the Reverend Dr Stephen Ridley, Chaplain to SSAFA Volunteers Durham and attended by the local Air Cadets who will carry the SSAFA Branch Standard on Saturday 11 November at 10.55am. After observing the two minutes silence, Ruth Wright of Bishop Auckland Pipes and Drums and volunteer for SSAFA Wear Valley and Teesdale will play a lament as wreaths are laid.

Partnership with Openreach raises £100k for SSAFA

Since announcing their partnership in 2015, Openreach, Britain’s digital network business, has now raised more than £100,000 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. From taking part in the Big Brew Up to trekking the Icelandic terrain to raise money, the team has got behind the cause whole-heartedly. In addition, Openreach has hired nearly 2,500 veterans since 2011.

Already this year has recruited almost 300 trainee engineers from a Forces background. SSAFA continues to work with Openreach to support the Armed Forces community.

SSAFA Ambassador Ant Middleton challenges Vogue Williams to complete military fitness test to show the strength of the women in our Armed Forces

SSAFA Ambassador and Special Forces Veteran Ant Middleton will be putting Vogue Williams through her paces to take on the Royal Marines physical fitness test. The test will include a 4.8km run in two parts in under 12 minutes 30 seconds, followed by timed bleep tests including running, press ups, sit ups and pull ups.

41% of Veterans have felt isolated research reveals

27% have had suicidal thoughts after leaving the Forces

New YouGov research commissioned by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has found that more than two in five (41 per cent) of British Armed Forces veterans surveyed have felt lonely or isolated at some point since leaving the military.

When asked if they have ever felt overwhelmed by negative feelings, a third (34 per cent) of the veterans surveyed said they had. Over a quarter (27 per cent) admitted to having suicidal thoughts after finishing their military service.

Forces families celebrate the joys of adopting through SSAFA

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is celebrating National Adoption Week with an animation featuring success stories of its military adopters.

The animation features the stories of two children showing what life is like living in a military family which looks to help dispel the myths of military adoption.

These myths include concerns around the lack of stability due to regular postings or deployment, military families may be over disciplined or lack the structure of a 9-5 working parent.

Cadogan Hall concert to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

L’Orchestre du Monde is holding a fundraising concert at Cadogan Hall in London to raise money for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Tickets are on sale now for the performance on Tuesday 17 October with some of the finest international musicians coming together to support the Armed Forces community.

The money raised by L’Orchestre du Monde will help SSAFA to continue to provide lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

L’Orchestre du Monde is a unique ensemble brought together by renowned Polish conductor Janusz Piotrowicz.
