A busy week at The NFA

Last Thursday was an eventful day for The Not Forgotten Association with 12 beneficiaries attending the Founder’s Day Parade at The Royal Hospital Chelsea, before joining a further 2,500 veterans at Buckingham Palace for our Garden Party in the afternoon. Not only is the parade a sight to behold, but it was an honour and privilege for the group to be presented to His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank The Royal Hospital Chelsea for their kind invitiation!

The Walk Of America 2018 is officially underway!

A team of wounded veterans have embarked on a 1,000 mile journey across America to spread awareness of military mental health, and raise vital funds to support those suffering from the invisible wounds of war. In order to reflect Expedition Patron Prince Harry’s vision that those who serve together should heal together, the team includes veterans from both the UK and the US.

John Mayhead is walking the first 2 weeks of the expedition. Like many on the team, he suffers from PTSD, chronic depression and anxiety. Here he talks about the struggles, both physical and mental, that the team have faced along the way.

Trekking the Highland Way for the RNRMC’s Twickenham 100

A group of 11 Royal Navy sailors from HMNB Clyde completed a gruelling 100 mile walk along the Highland Way, raising over £1,000 for the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC).

Setting out from Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, the MTE team from HMNB Clyde began their trek on Monday 19th March with the aim of completing the challenge by the Friday.

The West Highland Way passes across some of Scotland’s most beautiful yet challenging landscapes. To undertake the trek, it is advised that only experienced, physically fit and fully prepared walkers take on the route.

Help for Heroes delivers UK Team for Warrior Games

Congratulations to the 40 Veterans and Service Personnel who proudly served their country again in the Warrior Games, a major international sports event.

The team was trained and selected by Help for Heroes to represent the UK at the 2018 Warrior Games from 1 – 9 June in Colorado Springs and they took part in nine adaptive sports: Athletics, Archery, Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Sitting Volleyball, Shooting, Swimming, Powerlifting and Wheelchair Basketball.

Competitor Ian Primmer served in the Royal Logistic Corps and suffers from PTSD and hip pain. Ian, who competed in cycling, swimming, and shooting.

Sailing charity invites veterans to get on board for competitive racing

A Cornish sailing charity has announced the official launch of its new racing division, and is calling out for injured veterans to get on board.

Turn to Starboard uses sail training to support Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations from its base at Falmouth in Cornwall. Now the charity has opened a second office at Gosport near Portsmouth and is inviting veterans to get on the ‘right tack’ to recovery by taking part in a fun 3-day sail race competition next month.

In partnership with Help for Heroes and The Endeavour Fund, the charity is holding a fun 3-day sailing regatta on Wednesday 18, Thursday 19 and Friday 20 July, 2018.

Activity Week in Scotland

There is never a dull moment at the NFA as next week 20 beneficiaries will be heading to Scotland for a week of outdoor activities. Embodying the Association’s mantra of ‘From Comradeship To Challenge’, the holiday is designed to encourage individuals to push themselves and generate teamwork through a range of activities including rock climbing, canoeing, archery, pistol shooting, high-ropes and more. Veterans’ charity has huge success at Worthing 10k

On Sunday 3 June, 55 runners took on the Worthing 10k in aid of local charity, Care for Veterans.

The team, dubbed the ‘Fantastic Fifty’, included staff from Care for Veterans, family members of Care for Veterans’ residents, a serving soldier, and ex-Service personnel.

Tyron Crayford, who is a resident at Care for Veterans, also took part and was pushed around the course in his wheelchair by four of the Fantastic Fifty.

Crawley blind veteran to take on 22-mile walk along D-Day beaches for military charity

A blind veteran from Crawley is currently training to take part in a 22-mile walk along on the Normandy coastline to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day.

Lloyd Hanslow, 41 and from Tilgate, will take part in the event alongside five other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. The challenge will take place this Wednesday, the anniversary of the 1944 Allied invasion of occupied France.

82-year-old blind veteran to take on 24 hour endurance cycle challenge at Brands Hatch

A blind veteran from Brighton has rekindled a lifelong passion for cycling as he prepares for a 24 hour cycle challenge around the iconic Brands Hatch racetrack in aid of military charity Blind Veterans UK.

Peter Burbery, 82 and from Brighton, will take part in the challenge on 16 September with three other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. All four blind veterans will make up a relay team, each undertaking six-hour sections to complete the 24 hour challenge alongside their sighted tandem pilots.

Liverpool blind veteran to take on 22-mile walk along D-Day beaches for military charity

A blind veteran from Liverpool is currently training to take part in a 22-mile walk along on the Normandy coastline to commemorate the anniversary of D-Day.

Mike Johnson, 55 and from Knotty Ash, will take part in the event alongside five other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women. The challenge will take place on 6 June, the anniversary of the 1944 Allied invasion of occupied France.

Mike says: “I feel very honoured to be taking part because while it’s a physical challenge, the event is really about keeping alive the memory of those brave men who lost their lives on the beaches of France.”
