HRH The Earl of Wessex Endorses Six Seafarers UK President’s Awards

Seafarers UK’s President’s Awards are given annually to individuals or organisations who have made a significant contribution, either through a donation, participation in a challenge event, or championship of the charity’s cause.

This year, Seafarers UK – established in 1917 as King George’s Fund for Sailors – chose to acknowledge those who made a difference through their generous support of the charity’s Centenary Appeal in 2017.

At Seafarers UK’s Annual Meeting on 22 May awards were presented by Captain Ian McNaught, Deputy Master of Trinity House, to individuals and organisations who have made a real difference to the lives of past, present and future seafarers.

Phil Eaglesham is leading his team to build an innovative mobility device that will give confidence and independence to users.

Phil contracted Q Fever (Helmand Fever) during active service as a Royal Marine Commando in Afghanistan. As a result, he relies on wheelchairs and similar devices for his mobility.

Shortlist announced for RAF welfare charity’s annual awards night

The RAF’s leading welfare charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund has announced the shortlisted nominees for its sixth annual awards. The winners of nine awards categories will be revealed at a special ceremony at London’s Gibson Hall, to be held on 7 June 2018.

Air Vice-Marshal David Murray, Chief Executive of the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: “The RAF Benevolent Fund simply could not carry out the vital work that we do, supporting the RAF Family, without the help of our incredible supporters. Each year it gets harder and harder to decide on the winners of these awards and that is a testament to the hard work, dedication and creativity with which our supporters contribute to the Fund and its work.

Cumbrian Challenge 2018 Success

This weekend four former Alabaré Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans residents took on the daunting task of the Cumbrian Challenge in support of Walking With The Wounded. The 23km tab took them up Lingmoor Fell and Blake Ridge, an elevation of around 5000ft and in temperatures of around 24 degrees, and whilst they completed against about another 100 teams, the four came first for a second year running as they completed the course in around 4 ½ hours.

Paul Bradley (Ex-Parachute regiment) John Clark (Ex-Rifles), Paul Newark (Ex-Grenadier Guards) and Mark Arnold (Ex-Royal Gibraltar Regiment) decided to run the course despite the temperatures.

US and UK veterans’ charities to host research seminar bringing world-renowned experts together to tackle sight loss

A research seminar bringing world-renowned experts together to discuss sight loss will be taking place in Manchester this week (23/05). The “Sight loss as a consequence of traumatic brain injury and mental health implications” seminar is the second in a series looking at various research and innovation ideas in relation to blind veterans.

The seminar is part of an exchange programme called Project Gemini where members of the US organisation the Blinded Veterans Association (BVA) will be visiting Britain to join Blind Veterans UK this week.

OA’s Chief Executive Officer, Lee Holloway, was delighted to present Flying Officer Carla Robinson with the charity award at RAF Cranwell’s Graduation Dining-In Night on Friday 4th May 2018.

The OA provides the ‘Work in the Community’ award in recognition of the work carried out by cadets supporting a charitable cause, whilst undergoing officer training at RAF College Cranwell.
