Stoll announces new funding to mark Armed Forces Day

Stoll, the leading provider of supported housing for Veterans in the greatest need, has received £12,000 from the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund to help promote independent living for ex-RAF servicemen and women. Alongside the housing Stoll provides, the charity offers a unique combination of health, wellbeing and employment support to vulnerable and disabled ex-Servicemen and women to help them live as independently as possible. Stoll will use the funding to support elderly and disabled Veterans and their dependents, enabling them to remain in the comfort of their own home. This includes providing domestic support such as helping with washing and cleaning.

Forces in Mind Trust releases Activity Report and awards new grant to Veterans Scotland

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) marks the end of its fifth year as a grant-awarding, evidence-generating Trust with the release of its 2016 Activity Report, which reviews the work and outcomes of FiMT funded projects and the Trust’s future direction. FiMT also announced the award of a new grant to Veterans Scotland at the start of one of FiMT’s busiest weeks to date with report launches scheduled for every day!

A significant section within the 2016 Activity Report describes the formal adoption of ‘Change Mechanisms’, a new but key element of FiMT’s Change Model. This Change Model has enabled the Trust to move towards a more proactive approach to identifying and filling gaps in evidence and support, and to promote collaboration and innovation.

Seafarers UK awards Combat Stress a grant of £35,000

Seafarers UK has awarded Combat Stress a grant of £35,000 towards the assessment, treatment and care of former Merchant Navy seafarers.

Half of this grant was made possible due to the Merchant Navy Fund (MNF), a collaborative initiative by Seafarers UK and the Merchant Navy Welfare Board, set up to help UK serving and retired Merchant Navy seafarers and their families.

Former Gurkhas’ gift to Nepal

We’re delighted to report the official opening of our retrofitted Welfare Centres in Gorkha and Lamjung, at the heart of lands devastated by the 2015 earthquakes.

Both centres were damaged by the disaster and have now been refurbished thanks to a gift of £48,000 from the 6th Gurkha Rifles (6GR) Regimental Trust to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the Regiment in 2017.

Informing Scotland – Communicating about the Armed Forces Community in Scotland, Funded by the Forces in Mind Trust

Veterans Scotland is delighted to announce that it is to receive a total of £75,000 from the Forces in Mind Trust, over the next three years, in order to engage with decision makers in statutory and third sector organisations across Scotland and inform them about those preparing to leave the Armed Forces and the ex-Service community and to encourage them to ensure that they are equipped to meet their obligations to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Veterans returning to civilian life receive boost from grant to the Thistle Foundation

A grant provided by ABF The Soldiers’ Charity to the Thistle Foundation, a health and wellbeing charity based in Scotland, will help Thistle to continue and further develop its work supporting veterans adjusting to civilian life.

Over the next 12 months, the grant will allow Thistle’s Veterans’ Programme to develop three strands of its work. The charity will provide 1-2-1 holistic case management for 10 Veterans.

More North East veterans transforming their lives thanks to national lottery players

Ex-Forces personnel in County Durham are being given the skills and confidence to improve their lives thanks to national lottery players.

Local charity, Finchale’s “Reaching Communities” project supports veterans with mental health, homelessness, training and employment issues that have led to social isolation.

The three year project which was awarded £487,000 of national lottery funding in 2016 helps those that have previously served in the Armed Forces by providing customised packages of ongoing support within the community and aims to support over 200 individuals throughout the project.

Merchant seaman from Morpeth take on 100km challenge for military charity

A merchant seaman from Morpeth is training to compete in the 100k Yorkshire walk for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Adam Potts, 27, was convinced to take part in the ultra-challenge by his climbing and hillwalking partners. He explains: “They signed up just last year and asked me if I’d consider joining them. In the end it was an easy decision. I love any kind of new challenge, plus it’s a fantastic cause!”
