National UK Audit – Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

The Veterans and Families Institute (VFI) at Anglia Ruskin University has been commissioned by the Royal British Legion Industries (RBLI) on behalf of COBSEO, the Confederation of Service Charities, to collect information on service providers who offer support to ex-Service personnel in the criminal justice system. The aim of this project is to develop a UK-wide understanding of the service provisions available to veterans in the criminal justice system.

This information will be collected via an electronic survey which will be sent out to all service providers who provide veteran specific support to ex-Service personnel in the criminal justice system.

New Forces in Mind Trust Report: A Pilot Study to Support Veterans in the Criminal Justice System

A new report, identifying the challenges faced by ex-Service personnel who enter police custody and ways to better support them was released today (3 April) and has found that the ex-Serving personnel in this study who are identified at the point of contact in police custody have responded encouragingly to targeted support.

The report, ‘A Pilot Study to Support Veterans in the Criminal Justice System’, was funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and delivered by Anglia Ruskin University, to examine the engagement and impact of a pilot veteran intervention programme, Project Nova.

A new online research resource on veterans’ health has just been launched

The Health of Veterans’ Research Team (HVRT) at King Edward VII’s (KEVII) Hospital is a new research group established to conduct literature reviews on veterans’ health. The HVRT has just launched their website which will act as an online research resource on veterans’ health by providing literature reviews, exclusive data, as well as news updates. Their website acts as a portal for sourcing information on the health of veterans, and also details more about the team and their current and future research projects. The Forces in Mind Trust takes its sector briefing programme to the South of England

The Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) held two South of England briefing events, the first in Portsmouth on Thursday 30th and the second in Andover on Friday 31st March, which were attended by over 55 people in total. Attendees came from a wide range of sectors including the Armed Forces Community and the Armed Forces charity sector as well as other key stakeholders and interested parties who work to support ex-Service personnel, and their families.

Forces Friends project recognised with FiMT sponsored national award

Forces Friends, a project providing support to older military veterans, has been awarded the Working Together Award, sponsored by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), at the Soldiering On national awards ceremony on Friday evening (24 March 2017) in London.

The annual Soldiering On Awards provide national recognition for exceptional individuals and organisations working within the Armed Forces Community, and is run by the Soldiering On Through Life Trust. The Working Together award, which recognises an organisation that has demonstrated a commitment to collaboration with the Armed Forces Community, is sponsored for the second time by FiMT

Bedtime reading as important as ever for UK parents and children

RAF Association’s Storybook Wings scheme helps serving parents to ‘make it home’ for bedtime

70% of parents read to their child at least once a day*, according to new research from the Royal Air Forces Association, the largest UK charity for serving and former RAF personnel.

The Association surveyed members of the public ahead of International Storytelling Day to find out more about the average bedtime in a UK household. Despite technological advances, a surprising 83% of parents and grandparents still prefer to read physical books to their child/grandchild, rather than using devices like a Kindle or iPads.

Launch of new online resource challenges employers to think differently about taking on ex-Service personnel

The Poppy Factory – the charity that helps injured ex-Service men and women find work – has launched a new online toolkit for employers.

The Employer Toolkit, funded by Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), gives advice and guidance to employers, helping them to manage a workforce with complex health conditions – and aims to dispel the negative stereotypes of veterans and the problems they may face.

KartForce supports PhD study into the positive effects of motorsport on injured veterans

KartForce is assisting with further work to explore how motorsport can help in the rehabilitation of injured veterans. At a track day in Milton Keynes held on Saturday, the first in a series of interviews to take place over the next 3 years were carried out with the drivers as part of the second phase of a clinical study.

In 2014 Dr Nigel Hunt, an Associated Professor in the School of Medicine at Nottingham University carried out a Clinical Study into the effects of karting on armed forces veterans.

Former officer community faces new challenges

The OA has produced an infographic to sit alongside their latest report – funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and released last week. The report provides a definitive demographic profile of the serving and ex-officer community.

Demographic Research of the Serving and Former Officer Community, states that there are over 26,820 serving UK officers, and an estimated 371,600 veteran officers in Great Britain, including 19,200 over ninety years of age.
