RAF Association membership supports those who protect us

The RAF Association will join millions across the UK this Remembrance Sunday in honouring those who have served and still serve in the Armed Forces.

Those individuals put their lives on the line to protect all of us, but sadly, all too often, they need a little help themselves. The RAF Association does what it can to assist those that serve, veterans and their dependants through practical, emotional and financial support.

The RAF Association’s members and volunteers are supporting veterans all year round. People like Albert, who they helped apply for medals he was entitled to, or Ken, who was aided through difficult times by his RAF Association welfare support volunteer.

Poppy pup helping raise funds for Legion

A pup called Poppy, a two-year old Airedale terrier, has been helping her owner, Colin Stegeman collect for The Royal British Legion in the Shropshire village of Worthen.

Accompanying 82 year old, former RAF serviceman, Colin, on his rounds and home visits, Poppy the pup is a big hit with the villagers and even sports her very own specially fashioned poppy harness. A talking point for many of those living in the village, Poppy has been aiding Colin in selling poppies for this year’s Appeal, as well as helping her owner spread the word about the Legion’s work and its 2017 message – Rethink Remembrance.

Prince Harry opens 89th Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey 70,000 Remembrance Symbols planted by The Poppy Factory 

Prince Harry will open the 89th Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey, to remember those in the Armed Forces who have lost their lives, on Thursday 9th November at 11.00 am.

Organised and run by The Poppy Factory every year, the Field will have 380 plots laid out in the names of military organisations and associations on the North Green of the Abbey. Remembrance symbols, made by veterans working at the factory in Richmond, are planted in these plots, often with hand written messages, from family, friends or colleagues.

Supporting Wounded Veterans’ Pain Management Programme

Supporting Wounded Veterans’ Pain Management Programme run at, and in conjunction with, King Edward’s VII’s hospital, has now completed its first year of residential programmes. It is going from strength to strength, with on average 130 applications for every 10 places. We have also opened a Pain Clinic, where Veterans can come not only for advice on how to manage their pain, but also have a medication review.

Jaguar Land Rover Wins Award for Service Leavers Work Experience

Jaguar Land Rover received the Officers’ Association (OA) ward for Excellence in Work Experience Programmes at the BSI Resettlement Awards.

The BSI Resettlement Awards celebrate Service leavers who successfully transition from military to civilian life, as well as the people and organisations that support them. The winners were announced at a recent awards ceremony at the Lowry Hotel Manchester.

London Poppy Day gets underway in bid to raise £1m in one day

2,000 collectors hit the capital’s streets in aid of the Poppy Appeal
London Poppy Day, the largest one-day street collection of its type in Europe was underway today, as 2,000 collectors including uniformed personnel, from the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force, veterans and supporters, hit the streets in a bid to raise £1m for The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Collections took place at 68 tube stations and mainline stations across the city alongside performances by military bands at ten stations. The familiar voices of beloved Londoners Barbara Windsor and Shane Richie could be heard across the tube network encouraging Londoners to get into the spirit of the day and to give generously.
