Combat Stress Trustee receives MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours

It was announced on Friday that Colonel Robert Ward, Trustee for Combat Stress, has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours for voluntary services to the veteran community.

The Queen’s birthday honours list recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK. Colonel Robert Ward, a Trustee, supporter and former Honorary Treasurer for Combat Stress, the UK’s leading mental health charity for veterans, was awarded an MBE for his commitment to veterans’ mental health.

99 year-old blind veteran receives prestigious World War II medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Gloucester has been formally presented with the Chevalier de l’Odre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Arthur Parish, 99 and from Brockworth, was presented with the honour by Lt Col Andrew Tabor, High Sheriff of Gloucester, at the Millbrook Lodge Care Centre.

Arthur says: “It really is very nice to have this recognition, especially after all of these years. I really wasn’t expecting anything like this, not at my age.

Navy Wrens honoured at new tribute garden in Plymouth city centre

A tribute garden has been planted to commemorate a century since the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service. The new floral design describes the anniversary and was planted by a Royal Navy working party assisting the city council.

This project came about through a conversation with the former Lord Mayor’s consort and Councillor Brian Vincent. He was keen to support the National Centenary celebrations of the formation of the Women’s Royal Naval Service in 1917 and knew there were gardens around the City of Plymouth used for such purposes.

Forces in Mind Trust releases next Call to Mind Review in the UK Series: Findings from the Review of Veterans’ and their Families’ mental health needs in Northern Ireland

A new report outlining changes and challenges to mental health services for veterans in Northern Ireland, funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), was released on 23 June 2017, and has identified that there is a need for greater support for veterans with mental and related health and social care problems from statutory services.

The review explores statutory mental health services for veterans, taking into account the sensitive issues within the context of the country’s complex history, current political landscape, and impact of equality legislation.

WRNs on parade to mark 100th Anniversary

Former members of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS) have joined the recruits at HMS Raleigh on parade to mark the 100th anniversary of the formation of their Service.

Nearly 40 blue-badge WRNS accepted the invitation to take a trip down memory lane by spending the day at the establishment. The highlight of the event saw the former WRNS perform a march-pass during the passing-out-parade ceremony for the latest group of recruits, who were marking the completion of their initial training.

New Regional Fundraiser joins Poppyscotland team

Poppyscotland is delighted to announce the arrival of a new Regional Fundraiser for its welfare centre in Inverness. Frances Beveridge joins a team going from strength to strength since the centre opened its doors four years ago.

In her role, Frances will develop, implement and grow supporter-led fundraising within the region. A critical aspect of the job is to support the volunteer Poppy Appeal Area Organisers to maximise their local appeal totals and Frances will also be working to maximise the potential of the schools fundraising strategy and promote and enable supporter participation in large-scale national events.

Severely wounded at 19, veteran Stephen Vause shares his story for Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to honour the bravery and commitment of British Service personnel both past and present. At this time, we think of the veterans cared for by The Royal Star & Garter Homes and share their stories of sacrifice and courage. One soldier, Stephen, was just 19 when he was severely wounded on his first tour of duty in Iraq. Now 29, Stephen receives specialist care from The Royal Star & Garter Homes.

Businesses Big and Small Back Armed Forces Entrepreneurs

Ahead of National Armed Forces Day in Liverpool

Start-up businesses and large national organisations came together at Liverpool today, in the lead up to National Armed Forces Day, to celebrate entrepreneurship within the Armed Forces community locally and nationally.

Amongst the sponsors were NatWest and The Military Mutual, who were hosted by Liverpool City Council, all coming together to support X-Forces beneficiaries. Three of these entrepreneurs included a former Royal Marine, RAF and Royal Navy family member that have launched businesses here in the Liverpool area.
