8th February 2018: Networking Event – Forces into Health – London

Join Forces into Health for their first networking evening of 2018. The group was formed in response to a growing number of Service Leavers who have either transitioned, or are thinking of transitioning, into the Health Sector. The Forces into Health network will aim to support individuals with contacts, advice and information, wherever possible. In particular, it signposts opportunities and recommends ‘points of entry’.

Support from military spouses needed for latest AFF survey – with prize up for grabs

The Army Families Federation (AFF) has long championed spousal employment, with a continual flow of spouses and partners approaching the charity to highlight the challenges they face gaining and maintaining employment.

AFF is now running a new survey to help them delve deeper into those challenges, examining what would make a real difference to those affected, and to what extent military life influences a spouse’s career.

Help for Heroes secures inquiry into Veterans Mental Health

The Defence Select Committee has announced it will be scrutinising Veterans mental health support this year, after Help for Heroes raised concerns in November last year.

In a letter to the Chair, Dr Julian Lewis, the Charity highlighted the issue of inadequate funding for NHS trusts who are finding their excellent work with Veterans and their families is being hindered by a lack of funding from central Government.

Head of Psychological Wellbeing, Karen Mead, welcomed the announcement saying: “Almost 500 individuals were discharged in 2016/17 with mental health issues – this has increased by 90% since 2012.

Are you ready for the 24-hour life raft survival challenge?

It will be cold, it could get windy, and it will definitely be wet!

A Cornish sailing charity is calling out for intrepid individuals prepared to leave their home comforts and spend 24 hours in a life raft for charity.

On Friday May 18, a team of brave volunteers will climb into an inflatable life raft and be floated out into Falmouth Harbour to battle the wind and waves. The day-long challenge aims to raise funds for Turn to Starboard, a sailing charity supporting Armed Forces personnel affected by military operations.

PM awards veteran fundraiser who took Social Media by storm

The Prime Minister has recognised Jeffrey Long MBE, an 86-year-old former paratrooper from West Yorkshire, who raised over £120,000 for The Royal British Legion in 2017 when his sponsored walk went viral.

Jeffrey was propelled to fame during last year’s Poppy Appeal when his 86-mile fundraising walk began trending on social media after being shared by comedian Jason Manford. The attention resulted in his JustGiving page total going from £300 to £75,000 within 24 hours, eventually reaching over £120,000.

He is the latest recipient of the Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding volunteers who are making a change in their community and inspiring others.

Great British Bake Off winner Sophie Faldo becomes ambassador for Combat Stress

After baking her way to victory in last year’s Channel 4 Great British Bake Off, winner Sophie Faldo from Surrey is now helping to raise awareness of veterans’ mental health by becoming an ambassador for Combat Stress.

In December last year she visited Combat Stress, the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health, at their treatment centre in Leatherhead, Surrey, to find out how the charity supports former servicemen and women.

Sophie is a former Army officer and served with the Royal Artillery in Afghanistan.
