After Gunga and his brother Kul featured in our recent article, one of our supporters recognised him from his time in the Army. The British Officer had served with Gunga in Malaya in the late 1960s and was kind enough to share their platoon’s group photo with us.

Helping hand for a loyal friend

Gyan Bahadur Sunuwar spent 14 dedicated years working in support of Gurkha veterans and their communities. When disaster struck his own family, we were there to ensure he didn’t face it alone. Gyan started working for us in 1993. At the time, we ran a Welfare Centre on the hill next to his home village and Gyan was pleased to get a job there at the age of 31. Only a few years later, civil war broke out in Nepal and conflict in the hills was the backdrop for the next decade of our work.

Innovative projects required for The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity’s ‘Helping Hands’ programme

The RNRMC’s ‘Helping Hands’ programme, which is a new prevention and early intervention initiative, is looking for charitable projects that recruit volunteers to provide support, friendship and practical help for naval service beneficiaries.

Made available through Treasury Libor funds, ‘Helping Hands’ is a programme that financially supports charities that can demonstrate the effective deployment of volunteers within their respective groups.

The RNRMC are searching for innovative ideas that will have a positive impact on naval service beneficiaries lives.

Charity welcomes two new team members

A charity in Falmouth who support veterans affected by military operations has announced the appointment of two new staff members.

Nadia Hughes-Penzer is appointed Events and Fundraising Coordinator at Turn to Starboard, a sailing charity based at Falmouth Marina. She is joined by communications expert Marie Harris who will help to promote a round Britain Challenge sailing expedition organised by the charity and sets sail next month.

Turn to Starboard support injured veterans from all over the UK by taking them sailing and help many to gain RYA sailing qualifications to start new careers. Nadia decided to join the charity after being inspired by the service it offers.

Royal Ascot supports The Armed Forces for the fifth year

This year, the unofficial Armed Forces Day at Ascot Racecourse took place on the Friday, 23rd June. Military stewards collected for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity as well as The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity and The RAF Benevolent Fund.

Supported by the Trustees of Ascot Racecourse, there were two-for-one tickets available to the Armed Forces and their guests, which included exclusive access to the Armed Forces bar and lounge. Proving to be a popular event, an impressive 2,650 tickets were sold!

Less than three weeks to go for the Round Britain Challenge 2017

On Saturday 5th August, a team of 17 veterans will commence the epic Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge 2017. The eight-week journey, which covers a vast 2,000 miles, is all-hands-on-deck, with each crew member living, working and sleeping every moment on the 92-foot tall vessel, Spirit of Falmouth, donated to the charity by The Prince’s Trust.

Media Invitation – Passchendaele Parade to provide a poignant reminder

Thousands of people from across the country are set to descend on the town of Crieff this Sunday (30th July) ahead of a poignant parade and service to mark the 100-year commemoration of the Battle of Passchendaele – a conflict that claimed the lives of tens of thousands of Allied soldiers.

The national event, which will launch the wider ‘Crieff Remembers’ fortnight and is being supported by Armed Forces charity Legion Scotland, will begin at 10:30am with a parade through the town featuring more than 150 veterans along with serving soldiers from The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

The Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) is delighted to hear that we have been re-awarded the MoD Employer Recognition Scheme Silver Award. The Scheme acknowledges employers who have provided exceptional support to the Armed Forces community and defence by going above and beyond their covenant pledges and we are proud to be supporting those who serve.

The Scheme was launched in 2014 and DMWS was awarded Silver for outstanding support to armed forces personnel, veterans and reservists in the same year. The awards are reviewed every 3 years and we are very happy that our Silver has been revalidated in 2017.

Mission Motorsport Rad Am Ring -24 Hr cycle challenge

Fundraising for Mission Motorsport, next weekend a group of intrepid cyclists will be competing in the Rad Am Ring, 24hr cycle challenge at the Nurburging, in the Eifel region of Germany. Each lap is 26km and includes a 1500 ft climb. Two laps is the equivalent of cycling up Scafell Pyke. Each rider hopes to complete at least 8 laps within the 24hrs and included in the team will be Para-Olympian Gold Medallist Jon-Allan Butterworth, getting his legs back in shape after his Rio gold medal of 2016.
