Dunkirk the movie partners with Contact

Dunkirk opens as 400,000 British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. George Wagner was one of those young men and after decades of burying the memory of his experience, he opened up to Gemma Morgan (Former Army Captain, Kosovo) and Louis Nethercott (Former Royal Marine Commando, Afghanistan) in the Contact short Film Dunkirk Today.

Alongside Warner Brothers, Contact has produced the short film Dunkirk Today which highlights the similarities and differences across the past 77 years of conflict.

Walking With The Wounded join the team at Hougoumont Farm in Belgium to unearth secrets from the epic Battle of Waterloo.

Waterloo Uncovered is “the groundbreaking charity that combines world-class archaeology with veteran care and recovery”. The project began on the farm in 2015, founded by Mark Evans and Charlie Foinette who studied archaeology together at University College London before joining the army. Both chose the Coldstream Guards, the British regiment that played a vital role in the allied victory at Waterloo.

In 2010, returning from Afghanistan, Mark was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). When the MoD began a project to support veterans through archaeology, this revelation got the friends thinking.

New Forces in Mind Trust funded project: Novel approach to treating post-traumatic stress disorder

A novel approach could soon play a significant role in helping British military veterans overcome post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), thanks to a new Cardiff University research project.

Funded by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT) and supported by Health and Care Research Wales, the study will seek to help veterans who have not responded to current first line PTSD treatments.

The two-year study will investigate the effectiveness of a new therapy known as 3MDR, where patients walk on a treadmill whilst interacting with a series of self-selected images that are related to their trauma, and displayed on a large screen.

Alpine Canoeing in the french Alps – 4 – 9th July & 9th – 14th July

Thanks to funding from Helps for Heroes, we were once again able to take two groups to the French Alps for the most exhilarating trip in our calendar of events – white water canoeing. Based in Vallouise these trips embrace the NFA ethos of “Comradeship to Challenge” and embody all that is great about the NFA; mixing veterans from the Falklands, Gulf War 91 and Northern Ireland with those from more recent conflicts, and bringing those suffering from PTSD, amputees and others with a variety of injuries – including some still serving but undergoing rehabilitation – together as a team.

DMWS helps to reduce veteran’s social isolation

In recent years the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) has extended their person-centred medical welfare service to military veterans, a population which is growing and increasingly in need of our care. Our Welfare Officer, Karen Daniels, provides practical and emotional support to veterans aged 65+, who are receiving medical treatment at the Central Manchester University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (CMFT) in Manchester.

A few weeks ago Karen met Mr Paddy Black, a 96 year old WW2 veteran at CMFT Manchester, where he attended as an outpatient 3x a week for blood transfusion.
