DMWS elected to Cobseo Executive

The Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS) is delighted to have been elected to the Confederation of Service Charities (Cobseo) Executive alongside War Widows Association and the Poppy Factory. The results were announced during the Cobseo Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 11 July 2017.

Cobseo’s Chairman, General Sir John McColl, opened the Annual Meeting with a warm welcome. He reported on the past activities of the Confederation and gave an update on current issues concerning the members. He said: “The size and shape of the Armed Forces have undergone, and continue to undergo, radical alteration with further reviews round the corner.

Ex-Service personnel, employment and mental health: Forces in Mind Trust issues call for research proposals

Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), in collaboration with Centre for Mental Health and King’s Centre for Military Health Research, has issued its second highlight notice under its multi-million pound Mental Health Research Programme, a five year programme established to encourage high quality research in the field of veterans’ and their families’ mental health.

The aim of this highlight notice is to encourage applications through the Mental Health Research Programme (MHRP) that propose innovative ways to identify, evaluate and/or propose new methods to address employment rates of former Services personnel with mental ill-health.

Online tools shown to work to help cut drinking in former soldiers 

UK Armed Forces personnel moving back into civilian life and having difficulties with alcohol could be helped by the use of online tools, a new study has revealed.

The research led by Newcastle University, published in the Journal of the Royal Army Medical Corps, shows that web-based programmes may be an effective way to tackle excess alcohol consumption.

Findings by the experts have now been used to develop new documents funded by the Forces in Mind Trust to summarise the effectiveness of interventions to protect the wellbeing of those in the military.

Soldiering On Awards are delighted to announce the launch of the 2018 Awards – which this year will include 3 exciting new business categories in partnership with X-Forces. The official launch took place at a recent reception held at MoD Main Building, Whitehall. It was sponsored by Thales UK and had Awards Patron the Rt Hon Earl Howe PC, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords and Minister of State for Defence in attendance.

QAHH Summer Fayre raises over £5,500 for disabled veterans

On Saturday 8 July, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) opened its doors for its annual Summer Fayre. The event raised a total of £5,575 for the charity!

The Summer Fayre is held to raise money for the Worthing-based Hospital Home, which cares for disabled ex-Servicemen and women. QAHH strives to improve the mobility and independence of its residents through rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social and recreation activities.

Visitors browsed the various market and craft stalls, took part in tombolas and raffles, and were treated to performances by dance troupes and military band, The Band of the Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.

Warrior Challenge pair enjoy triumphant finish at Westminster Bridge

On 29th June 2017, Andy Reid and Glen Hughes paddled their way past the Houses of Parliament and underneath Westminster Bridge to signal the end of their epic, 14-day adventure, which began in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. Blood, sweat and tears were put into this enormously challenging feat, which saw both men cycle 400 miles and kayak an impressive 125 miles in just two weeks. They were also joined by Andy North, a cycling world record holder from Ultra6, who ran a marathon alongside them every day, for 10 days of the Challenge.

Service policeman from Liverpool completes 35 mile charity walk in the Falkland Islands

A Service policeman from Liverpool has completed a 35 mile charity walk in the Falkland Islands for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Gareth Bloodworth, 31 and from Stoneycroft, arranged the challenge in a bid to tests his organisational capabilities. He explains: “I wanted to test my resourcing and communication skills, and also develop my ability to organise an event involving Service personnel.”
