Defence Secretary shows commitment to Armed Forces mental health with over £220-million funding and new helpline

Gavin Williamson has pledged to increase funding for Armed Forces mental health services over the next decade and launched new Military Mental Health Helpline

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson has pledged to increase funding for Armed Forces mental health services to £220-million over the next decade and launched the new 24/7 Military Mental Health Helpline.

The new number – 0800 323 4444 – has been open and ready to take calls from midday on Sunday. It will be backed up by a major internal communications campaign on mental fitness across the services.

OA Launches Hon Reps Roadshow

Some of the OA’s network of volunteers attended the first in a series of roadshows in London.

The Honorary Representatives (Hon Reps) provide a crucial link with beneficiaries. They visit applicants in their home to understand their situation, across the UK and overseas. The information is then passed to the Benevolence Team in London, which assesses their needs and organises the support required.

How Jaguar Land Rover Supports Veterans

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has a long history of supporting the British Military, and is committed to helping ex-Service personnel transition into successful civilian careers.

The car manufacturer signed the British Armed Forces Military Covenant in 2014, and was official partner of the first Invictus Games in London and subsequent events in Orlando (2016) and Toronto (2017).

JLR works with the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) to provide insight days and work experience opportunities for Service personnel.

The Veterans’ Pain Clinic – Next appointments available Monday 19th March 2018

The Veterans Pain Clinic is free of charge to all veterans who are able to provide proof of service. The consultant is Dr Dominic Aldington. Having served in the Royal Army Medical Corps he was the Subject Matter Expert in Pain to the Surgeon General and was responsible for organising pain relief from the point of injury until a casualty left the service.

New plans for military flexible working become law

Service personnel will be able to apply for enhanced flexible working opportunities after the Armed Forces (Flexible Working) Bill became law on the 8th February.

The measures, which achieved Royal Assent on Thursday, will allow some military personnel to serve part-time for defined periods.

Consultation within the Armed Forces has found that personnel want more choice over the way they serve when their personal circumstances change, such as having young children, needing to care for elderly relatives, or taking on further training and education.

Soldiering On Awards 2018 Finalists Reception

Last night saw the 2018 award finalists gather together for a special celebratory reception held at the House of Lords.

The evening’s host, Soldiering On Awards President, General the Lord Dannatt, welcomed 170 guests, including our 41 finalists along with their nominators, to the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the Palace of Westminster.

Speaking during the event, Lord Dannatt praised all the finalists. “Now into its eighth year, the Soldiering On Awards exists to unite all of our community, together in a common purpose. Our aim is to recognise the achievements of the entire diverse group of people who have served their country, including our Reserve Forces and Cadets.”
