This includes: an outline of the benefits of employing reservists; guidance for line managers on how to manage reservists; managing requests regarding time off for training; details of rights and responsibilities, and financial assistance for employers and guidance and actions for when a reservist is mobilised, demobilised and returns to work.

RAF Marham Flyers hit fundraising heights at New Year’s Eve run

The RAF Marham Flyers Running Club hosted its annual New Year’s Eve 10k and saw a record turnout of 219 runners. Held in aid of the RAF Benevolent Fund, donations from fundraisers taking part totalled more than £3,400.

Although there was a lot of surface water on the airfield following the previous day’s record rainfall, the damp, windy conditions did nothing to put off people from taking part to help support the RAF’s leading welfare charity.

RAF charity’s £34,000 grant means disabled veteran had Christmas in comfort

Former RAF telecoms operator Ian Park says works to adapt his home and ensure he can live on one floor have ‘changed his life’.

The RAF Benevolent Fund stepped in to meet the shortfall in local authority funding needed to adapt Ian’s home in Sudbury and enable him to continue living there with his wife and teenaged son.

RAF Benevolent Fund expands support service to personnel and their partners experiencing anxiety or depression

New services to support the emotional wellbeing and mental health of RAF personnel are being launched this year by the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The RAF’s leading welfare charity is expanding its partnership with Anxiety UK to cover serving RAF men and women as well as those who have left the service. This includes both regulars and reservists, as well as their partners.

Those struggling with anxiety or depression will have access to an Anxiety UK helpline for emotional support, self-help material and subsidised membership.

Seafarers Awareness Week 2018 Dates Confirmed

Seafarers Awareness Week (SAW) will be 23-30 June in 2018, the co-ordinating charity Seafarers UK has confirmed. It will embrace the IMO’s ‘Day of the Seafarer’ on 25 June.

The main promotional theme for SAW will be ‘Maritime Industry Jobs’ – at sea and ashore – with an emphasis on engineering, to coincide with the Government’s ‘Year of Engineering’ campaign

The sixth Armed Forces Covenant annual report has been presented to parliament, showing good progress on providing support for the Armed Forces Community.

The Covenant is a promise from the nation ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Aged Veterans Project is picking up momentum

The Aged Veterans Project has recently been introduced in Herefordshire and Nottinghamshire. It is aimed at veterans aged 65 and over, their family members, dependents or carers to provide professional support that is tailored to their individual needs. The ex-Service community in the two councils has already greatly benefitted from the additional service available.

The project has been funded by the Aged Veterans fund and aims to improve the health and wellbeing of aged veterans, develop skills, reduce social isolation and enable independent living. The service is delivered by a consortium of organisations including Herefordshire Council, Nottinghamshire County Council, Alzheimer’s Society, Herefordshire Veterans Support Group, The Cart Shed and the leader of the project the Defence Medical Welfare Service (DMWS).

Ulster University Research Calls for Increased Support for Northern Ireland Veterans

A landmark report from Ulster University on veterans’ services in Northern Ireland has called for increased support for veterans and their families.

This is the second in a series of reports from the Northern Ireland Veterans Health and Wellbeing Study (NIVHWS) from Ulster University, which received £750,000 funding over four years from the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT).

The latest report outlines the findings of in-depth interviews with 20 service providers and 13 veteran-led focus groups, to establish more information about the current needs of this group and to help predict their future needs.
