Cast from the military community reunite for one-off remembrance performance

A unique collaboration of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel, veterans and their families from across the UK are uniting to stage a one-off Remembrance performance that they will create in less than five weeks.

The Royal British Legion’s recovery through the arts initiative, Bravo 22 Company, is delivered in partnership with The Drive Project and in collaboration with Newcastle Theatre Royal to put on a production on Remembrance Sunday.

Bravo 22 uses theatre and sculpture to help the Armed Force Community during recovery.

Brecon couple’s 2,300km bike ride smashes target to raise £7,000 for veterans in Wales

A BRECON COUPLE who cycled 2,300km through France and Spain to raise funds for veterans support service Change Step say they are already planning their next long-distance bike ride.

Jonathan and Amanda Barnett raised almost £7,000 for the project, which provides effective peer mentoring and practical help for former members of the Armed Forces — including assistance with mental health, substance misuse and other issues.

The couple pedalled from Cherbourg in the north of France to Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Spain, inside four weeks, covering up to 150km at a time and rattling through France without a rest day.

Blind veteran from East Sussex to climb Mount Kilimanjaro

A blind veteran from East Sussex is currently training to climb Mount Kilimanjaro for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Mark Threadgold, 49 and from Saltdean, has long aspired to climb the mountain, which, at 5,895m, is the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. He says: “I’ve wanted to do it for years now. I don’t know exactly why, but it’s just always been an ambition of mine. For whatever reason, this year just made the most sense, so here we are!”

One man and his ferret raise over £1,000

Last month Charlie Hammerton, an RAF veteran and his pet ferret, Bandit made the journey from Nottinghamshire to Oosterbeck in Holland to complete an eight mile walk to raise money for Combat Stress.

Both Charlie and Bandit wore WW2 uniform for the walk from the original drop zones in Oosterbeck to Arnhem Bridge.

“I have been to the area a number of times before, I’ve done parachute jumps, cycled and run, but never walked. Bandit and I walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall together for Motor Neurone disease earlier this year, so I decided to bring him along too.

Award-winning Welsh artist collaborates with blind veterans at local military charity

Award-winning Welsh artist, Luned Rhys Parri, has spent a week with Blind Veterans UK, a local charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

As Artist-in-residence, Luned shared her knowledge and skills with the charity’s beneficiaries at its training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno. The artwork created explored some of the veterans’ favourite pastimes, such as music and sport.

Nadia Wazera, Art & Craft Instructor at Blind Veterans UK, says: “The week captured the imagination of staff and veterans alike. The atmosphere was energetic and full of laughter.

Join military charity for a knit and natter

A local military charity is inviting Worcester residents to a morning of coffee, scrummy cake and chatter.

Blind Veterans UK, the charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, is inviting people to attend a coffee morning to find out more about the work it does in the community. The charity is also hoping to encourage guests to get involved as either a volunteer or as part of its Poppy Field Project.

Veterans celebrate end of gruelling 8-week round-Britain sailing expedition

A tall ship emerged from the mist into Falmouth Harbour on Sunday (Oct 1) as a crew of injured veterans marked an emotional conclusion to a gruelling round-Britain sailing expedition.

Seventeen military veterans celebrated the completion of the Turn to Starboard Round Britain Challenge – a 2000-nautical-mile voyage by finishing at Port Pendennis. Hardy participants had endured ferocious weather conditions – including menacing waves and wild gusts of up to 40 knots – in what organisers described as being ‘a challenge like no other’.

The return of the 92-foot long tall ship to Falmouth, where the challenge began on August 5, signaled the end of an epic marathon that has taken them to 15 ports across 3 countries.

NFA Teams Up With The Jubilee Sailing Trust

Next year the NFA will be offering the opportunity for 12 invited beneficiaries to take part in The Lord Dannatt Round Britain Challenge. They will take part in the 10-day voyage from Edinburgh to Belfast and will team up with cadets from all the services. This tall ship challenge will also commemorate the First World War which led to the founding of the Association. Former head of the Army General The Lord Dannatt is both Patron of the event and President of The Not Forgotten Association.
