Trainee teacher from Cornwall to run London Marathon for military charity that supports her grandfather

A woman from Cornwall is currently training to compete in this year’s London Marathon for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Rebecca Hare, 22 and from Newquay, maintains that the iconic 26.2 mile course has long been on her bucket list. She explains: “Every year I see the London Marathon on TV and every year I say, ‘I’d love to do that!’.

Throughout the day attendees will have the chance to hear from and meet with veterans who have made the transition from various parts of the military. There will be tips on how to make the transition from service life, plus an opportunity to register interest in an assessment centre for roles in their Cyber team.

Impact of participation in the Invictus Games

Forces in Mind Trust is delighted to award a grant of £183,500 to the Invictus Games Foundation, to explore the long-term impact of sport participation through an examination of the Invictus Games (IG), and to identify best practices to support the long-term well-being of serving and ex-Service personnel who are wounded, injured and sick (WIS).

The four-year project, entitled Beyond the Finish Line, will assess whether the competitors’ well-being improves significantly compared to non-competitors, and measure the duration of the difference.

Oxford woman to run London Marathon for military charity that supports her mother

A woman from Oxford is currently training to compete in this year’s London Marathon for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Sue Cassettari, 55 and from Kidlington, has long been aware of the charity, which provides free lifelong support to veterans living with sight loss. Her mother, Angela, is vision-impaired, as is her friend, Peter. Angela has age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) and glaucoma, meaning she has no sight in one eye and very, very limited sight in the other. Peter also has ARMD and almost no sight.

UK Armed Forces Day Gala Dinner Charity Partner Announced

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is delighted to be announced as the Charity Partner of the Armed Forces Day Gala Dinner held by Conwy County Borough Council at Venue Cymru on Friday 29 June 2018.

SSAFA will be working with the council to support the Gala Dinner as well as other activities taking place in Conwy around Armed Forces Day.

This year, the National Armed Forces Day event will be held in Llandudno in Conwy County on Saturday 30 June 2018. The events will be a fantastic focal point for the UK to come together to acknowledge the hard work and sacrifice of those that serve.

Glasgow’s Helping Heroes celebrate new location

Glasgow’s Helping Heroes held an Open Day to celebrate its new offices at The Pearce Institute on Tuesday 13 February. Following the successful event, attendee MSP Annie Wells, who lodged a Parliamentary Motion about the service.

Glasgow’s Helping Heroes is a partnership between SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and Glasgow City Council, to support the serving community, veterans and their families. ‘The team offer holistic help and advice on issues such as housing, employment and training, dealing with debt or financial issues as well as assistance relating to health problems.

Forward-looking initiative is offering affordable Wills for South Coast Residents

A national charity has joined forces with a number of local south coast solicitors for an initiative that offers affordable Will creation in exchange for charitable donations.

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) ‘Make a Will Fortnight’ project sees solicitors firms across Portsmouth, Plymouth and the Isle of Wight waive their fees on standard Wills. In exchange, those who require the creation of a Will are instead encouraged to make a charitable donation to the RNRMC.

‘Make a Will Fortnight’ will commence on February 12th and will run until February 25th. Due to high demand, potential clients are encouraged to enquire as soon as possible.

PTSD Resolution Joins Cobseo

Armed Forces’ Veterans mental health charity PTSD Resolution has joined Cobseo, the Confederation of Service Charities, which provides a single point of contact for communication by Forces’ charities with Government and other organisations.

Colonel Tony Gauvain (Retired), Chairman of PTSD Resolution says:
“We are delighted to be accepted to join Cobseo, which represents the serving and Veterans community of some six million people and their dependants. Membership enables us to promote and further the mental welfare and general interests of the Armed Forces community.

Soldiering On Awards 2018 Finalists Reception

Last night saw the 2018 award finalists gather together for a special celebratory reception held at the House of Lords.

The evening’s host, Soldiering On Awards President, General the Lord Dannatt, welcomed 170 guests, including our 41 finalists along with their nominators, to the Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the Palace of Westminster.

Speaking during the event, Lord Dannatt praised all the finalists. “Now into its eighth year, the Soldiering On Awards exists to unite all of our community, together in a common purpose. Our aim is to recognise the achievements of the entire diverse group of people who have served their country, including our Reserve Forces and Cadets.”
