Staffordshire man completes “miracle marathon” in memory of his father after collapsing at 22 miles

An amazing man from Staffordshire completed the London Marathon last week after collapsing at 22 miles and spending an hour and a half being treated by medics.

Steve Stuttard, 40 and from Newcastle-under-Lyme, was running the London Marathon for the charity Blind Veterans UK, which supported his late father. His wife and children joined him in the medical tent before he put his trainers back on and completed the final four miles, finishing in under six hours.

Steve says: “It was my first marathon and I was feeling really good right up until 22 miles. Then suddenly my legs collapsed underneath me and the next thing I knew I was in the medical tent.”

‘Unique’ wellbeing books aimed at RAF youngsters launched at RAF Benson

A new series of books aimed at improving the mental health of the RAF Family has been launched at RAF Benson Community Primary School by the RAF’s leading welfare charity, the RAF Benevolent Fund.

The Fund is piloting the books in response to research which found more than half of military parents believed a military lifestyle had a negative impact on their children and led to an increase in psychosocial problems.

Chalke Valley Churches Donation

Alabaré are delighted to announce that nearly £11,000 has been raised for ‘Welcome Packs’ for homeless Veterans going in to the new Wilton Hill Veterans Village. The funds have been raised by the churches of the Chalke Valley, through a series of initiatives as part of their Lent project.

The Welcome Packs will contain a variety of household items for vulnerable Veterans’ who are moving in to the development. They will contain everything a person needs from the mattress through to the mug.

The Wilton Hill Veterans Village is a pioneering initiative that will boast 44 flats for ex-service personnel and will also include enterprise space and access for Veterans to engage in training and employment support.

Frogmore House and Garden to open for annual charity open day for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity on 6 June

Frogmore House and Garden, the charming royal retreat set within Windsor Castle’s magnificent Home Park, will open to the public in aid of SSAFA on 6 June 2018 as part of the annual charity garden open days.

Built in the 17th century, Frogmore House became a royal residence in 1792 when George III purchased it for his wife, Queen Charlotte. Since then, successive monarchs have enjoyed the tranquil surroundings and delightful interiors. Although it is no longer an occupied royal residence, Frogmore House is frequently used by the Royal Family for private entertaining.

AFF welcomes support for Service pupils in Wales

The Army Families Federation (AFF) is delighted to hear that a new £200,000 fund to support Service families in Wales has been announced by the Welsh Government. In 2017, the charity sent a detailed brief, on families’ behalf, to the Education Minister Kirsty Williams, highlighting the need for targeted pupil funding for Armed Forces children in Wales, and they are pleased to see that this important issue has now been recognised.

The Victory Swim, the annual water-based challenge supported by the Royal Navy, has announced its dates and details for both 2018 and 2019.

The 2018 event, which will raise money for the Felix Fund, will take place on Thursday 6 September at Waterland Outdoor Pursuits, Lake 32 Cotswold Water Park near Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Kings Lynn manufacturer chooses local Forces children’s charity as its charity of the year

King’s Lynn based medical device manufacturer, Bespak, has chosen to support its neighbouring charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers as Charity of the Year.

Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a charity which supports over 300 bereaved Armed Forces children across the UK, was selected following an employee vote to benefit from the company’s support over the next 12 months.

As part of its Charity of the Year commitment, Bespak, the leading developer and manufacturer of complex medical devices, are looking forward to getting involved in the many challenges that Scotty’s Little Soldiers participate in and will be organising a number of fundraising activities.

Service Complaints Ombudsman Annual Report

The Service Complaints Ombudsman’s Annual Report 2017 describes the work undertaken by the Office of the Service Complaints Ombudsman (OSCO) throughout 2017 and reports on the current state of the Service complaints process.

In its second year of operation, and despite clear improvements that have been made, the Ombudsman finds that the Service complaints process is neither efficient, effective or fair at this stage.
