Holidays for Heroes Jersey – Fundraiser at the Boat House Restaurant in St Aubin

Support for Holidays for Heroes Jersey is so strong in Jersey and on 14th September, a fundraising event at The Boat House Restaurant in St Aubin, provided guests not only with a grandstand view of the Jersey International Air Display, but also an opportunity to help two deserving causes.

A total of £15,000 was raised which included more than £12,000 donated to Holidays for Heroes Jersey and just over £3,000 to help provide relief aid for Barbuda – the first Caribbean island to suffer the full force of Hurricane Irma.

War Widows’ Remembrance Service

Every year on the Saturday of Remembrance weekend ,War Widows and their families gather at the Cenotaph to hold a very personal service of remembrance. The Service is conducted by the Chaplain to the Association; during the service the silence is observed and a simple tribute made of chrysanthemums, poppies and rosemary is laid in remembrance of fallen loved ones.

Project Semaphore – update

Project Semaphore, is an RNA initiative funded by the Aged Veterans Fund, to provide an iPad to address the issue of digital isolation in older Veterans which exacerbates loneliness and poverty. It is not an IT Project, it is a Project to provide friendship, support and practical help. With the outcome of better spiritual and mental health: a recent study equated loneliness in the elderly to the effect of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

The devices have been built to our specification and include shortcuts to the RN, RNA, RMA websites as well as several pre-loaded Apps, mindful that using an IT equipment for the first time can be overwhelming, the links to the RN are familiar and help to dilute initial fears.

Blind Veterans UK issues its 1000th Synapptic device

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, has issued its 1000th Synapptic device, a tablet with award-winning all-in-one software for people who are blind or vision-impaired.

Michael Ashman, 88 and from Surrey, received the device, a tablet, while attending the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Brighton. In doing so, he became the 1000th blind veteran that the charity has provided a device with.

The Royal British Legion have this month launched new best practice guides for improving the provision of education to Service children in state-maintained schools in England and Wales. The guides look at some of the big challenges facing Service children today and by sharing examples of best practice from across England and Wales, recommends ways in which local authorities, schools and families themselves can improve the experience of Service children in education.

RNRMC Publish Outcomes for ‘Through Life Pathway’ Benevolence Grants for 2018

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity have published their revised outcomes for the ‘Through Life Pathway’ benevolence grant 2018 application process.

Available through the RNRMC’s website, the guidelines list an overview of timings for the application process and the Themes and Outcomes for the ‘Through Life Pathway’ application process.

Those who are eligible for assistance is defined by the RNRMC’s Memorandum of Association as: “Men and women who are serving or have served in the Naval Service or the Auxiliaries or the Women’s Royal Naval Service, and their dependents”

NFL’s Minnesota Vikings host bereaved Forces children ahead of Twickenham debut

Eight bereaved Forces children from Armed Forces charity, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, came face to face to American sporting legends this weekend, as they went behind the scenes at Twickenham Stadium, ahead of the NFL’s clash between Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns.

The children, who have all lost a parent while serving in the British Armed Forces, spent the morning on Saturday (28th) with the Minnesota Vikings team and coach who helped them get to grips with American Football before watching the game live on Sunday (29th).

Plan your evening : The first thing to think about is how you want to spend the evening and whether you might like to go out or would prefer to stay home.

It is announced that the Military Wives Choirs will tour UK cathedrals and military churches in 2017 with their twelve-date “Home For Christmas” Tour.

The choirs, all made up of wives and partners of Armed Forces personnel as well as women from the wider military community, will be delivering a festive treat from Wednesday November 22 when they begin their tour at the beautiful Worcester Cathedral.

The Military Wives Choirs and M&Co have worked together to create a home and accessories collection. The range includes kitchen accessories, home fragrance and cushions, along with cosy socks and scarves in a stylish purple and lilac colour palette.

Launching in late October, the collection will be sold in 135 M&Co stores across the UK as well as online, with a percentage of the profits being donated to the Military Wives Choirs.
