New AFF film tackles the future of Army housing

A new film out today produced by the Army Families Federation (AFF) highlights the influence they’ve had on the development of policy concerning the Future Accommodation Model (FAM), and their ongoing work around the issue on behalf of Army families.
With FAM still in its development stage, AFF has taken the opportunity to remind families that they remain committed to representing and involving families in the process as much as they can.

Mansfield blind veteran marches at Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday

A blind veteran from Nottinghamshire has marched at the Cenotaph in London this Remembrance Sunday (12/11) with the charity Blind Veterans UK.

Andy Stowe, 61 and from Mansfield, was supported to do this by Specsavers stores including Crystal Peaks, which raised over £100. The money went towards sending blind veterans, including Andy, to march.

Andy marched with more than 100 other blind veterans supported by Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

National Assembly for Wales – Inquiry into the impact of the Armed Forces Covenant in Wales

One hundred years ago today saw the signing of the treaty which led to the end of hostilities in the First World War, but it was a covenant which was not to last.

A century on from that date and our Armed Forces and those who serve in them still command the respect of the people of Wales and remain a valued part of Welsh society. While defence matters are a responsibility of the UK Government, Wales also has a duty to provide the best support possible for those who have served or are serving in the military. The Armed Forces Covenant was enshrined in legislation in 2011.

SSAFA Health Visitor appointed to World Health Organisation role

Kerry Riley, SSAFA Health Visitor for Episkopi Cyprus and Kenya BATUK, has been delivering excellent health care support for SSAFA since March 2017. Her passion is seeing the difference that her work makes to the military community on a daily basis.

After seeing and applying for a new role being advertised, Cyprus-based Kerry has recently also been appointed as Public Health Technical Advisor for the World Health Organisation for a part-time role. This will entail promoting new guidance whilst also running alongside her current vital work with SSAFA.

Openreach go above and beyond for SSAFA veteran in need

Since striking up their partnership in 2015, Britain’s digital network business Openreach have raised nearly £100k for SSAFA, the UK’s oldest Armed Forces charity.

Graham Barnard, Openreach employee goes beyond the call of duty:
Dougie is a 92 year old veteran living in Southend, who has always been very proud of his appearance and has a bountiful collection of shoes and clothes. He lives in a warden controlled studio flat, so space is a premium and, up until recently, he didn’t have any bedroom furniture to store his clothing in. The lack of storage meant that Dougie’s flat was very cluttered, which made his home a trip hazard for him.

Plans unveiled for Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company to employ Scottish veterans

Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company, the largest employment development specifically for Scottish veterans in decades, will open at veterans’ charity Erskine’s headquarters next June, it was announced today.

Renfrewshire-based social enterprise SBMC is projected to help more than 40 of the country’s brave ex-servicemen and women every year through direct, flexible employment – whilst also offering vital tailored wrap-around welfare support and accommodation in collaboration with Erskine.

Free Dementia Training for Herefordshire and Nottinghamshire Veteran Community

As part of DMWS’s Aged Veteran Health and Wellbeing Project in Herefordshire and Nottinghamshire, we offer free dementia training courses, which are delivered by our project partner Alzheimer’s Society. The training is available for Nottinghamshire and Herefordshire residents who work with Armed Forces veterans, and families of Veterans aged 65 years or over. Once trained, the delegate will be able to utilise their new skills and knowledge to support people with dementia.

Former RAF serviceman scoops rollover draw

A former RAF serviceman from Cumbria has won £9,750 on the RAF Association’s Wings Lotto rollover. 84 year-old Mr Byers joined the RAF in 1951, aged just 18, and served for four years in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He has been an Association member for 33 years and a Wings Lotto player since it started nine years ago.

Speaking of what it felt like to win the money, Mr Byers said: “It was a dream. When I was called up to be told I had won, I thought it was a con. I have been entering the Wings Lotto for many years, but never thought I would actually win – but you know what they say, you have to be in it to win it!”

Eight charities feature in an innovative digital race that encourages people to donate more to good causes this Christmas

PayPal has joined forces with Aardman and Channel 4 for a unique Christmas campaign that will boost donations to eight of the UK’s most loved charities. Turkey Dash will see an elite field of CGI turkeys – one representing each charity – undergo vigorous training powered by online donations from the charities’ supporters, climaxing in a prime time race broadcast on Channel 4 on Friday 15th December.

The Veterans’ Pain Clinic – Next appointments available Monday 4th December

The first six months have received outstanding feedback. Launched in June, the Veterans’ Pain Clinic, part of the Centre for Veterans’ Health, at King Edward VII’s Hospital has been a great success.

The clinic is run at the Centre for Veterans’ Health, King Edward VII’s Hospital in association with Supporting Wounded Veterans. These appointments are free of charge – they just need your proof of service & a GP referral letter.
