London Poppy Day gets underway in bid to raise £1m in one day

2,000 collectors hit the capital’s streets in aid of the Poppy Appeal
London Poppy Day, the largest one-day street collection of its type in Europe was underway today, as 2,000 collectors including uniformed personnel, from the Royal Navy, the Army, and the Royal Air Force, veterans and supporters, hit the streets in a bid to raise £1m for The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

Collections took place at 68 tube stations and mainline stations across the city alongside performances by military bands at ten stations. The familiar voices of beloved Londoners Barbara Windsor and Shane Richie could be heard across the tube network encouraging Londoners to get into the spirit of the day and to give generously.

Partnership with Openreach raises £100k for SSAFA

Since announcing their partnership in 2015, Openreach, Britain’s digital network business, has now raised more than £100,000 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. From taking part in the Big Brew Up to trekking the Icelandic terrain to raise money, the team has got behind the cause whole-heartedly. In addition, Openreach has hired nearly 2,500 veterans since 2011.

Already this year has recruited almost 300 trainee engineers from a Forces background. SSAFA continues to work with Openreach to support the Armed Forces community.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity is recruiting for it’s new challenge: Rifle Run

Rifle Run combines a military march and shoot with a competitive, cross country race. Along the course you’ll find three shooting challenges (two air-rifle and one shotgun). Be warned – for every shot you miss you’ll face a 250m penalty loop. Miss all your shots and you’ll run 15km in total.

What’s your tactic? Pace yourself and hit the targets, or push your “red zone” and lose your aim?

The Armed Forces Para Snowsports Team – Report

The Armed Forces Para Snowsport Team (AFPST) has gone from strength to strength this year, with growth in the foundation teams and truly impressive performances on the world stage. The charity is run by volunteers, and exists to aid the recovery of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans. It does this through the medium of adaptive Alpine skiing, snowboarding and Nordic skiing, providing a winter sports focus for adaptive athletes to regain their spirit of challenge, competition and achievement.

Blind Veterans UK issues its 1000th Synapptic device

Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women, has issued its 1000th Synapptic device, a tablet with award-winning all-in-one software for people who are blind or vision-impaired.

Michael Ashman, 88 and from Surrey, received the device, a tablet, while attending the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Brighton. In doing so, he became the 1000th blind veteran that the charity has provided a device with.

The guides look at some of the big challenges facing Service children today and by sharing examples of best practice from across England and Wales, recommends ways in which local authorities, schools and families themselves can improve the experience of Service children in education.

Military Wives Choirs Announce “Home For Christmas” Tour 2017

It is announced that the Military Wives Choirs will tour UK cathedrals and military churches in 2017 with their twelve-date “Home For Christmas” Tour.

The choirs, all made up of wives and partners of Armed Forces personnel as well as women from the wider military community, will be delivering a festive treat from Wednesday November 22 when they begin their tour at the beautiful Worcester Cathedral.

Scottish high-street retailer M&Co is proud to announce an exclusive new collaboration with the Military Wives Choirs charity and a first ever retail partner relationship for the charity.

The Military Wives Choirs and M&Co have worked together to create a home and accessories collection. The range includes kitchen accessories, home fragrance and cushions, along with cosy socks and scarves in a stylish purple and lilac colour palette.

Launching in late October, the collection will be sold in 135 M&Co stores across the UK as well as online, with a percentage of the profits being donated to the Military Wives Choirs.
