Read moreA new initiative by the Aggie Weston’s Storybook Waves project has secured funding from the Annington Trust of over £40,000 for the next three years. Launching at the end of September 2017, the ‘Storybook Waves Book Club in a Box’ initiative seeks to relieve the anxiety of separation that families experience by connecting them through books and a nationwide network of Book Clubs.
Held in community houses at 21 base port areas, the Book Clubs will generally be hosted by Aggie Weston’s Pastoral Workers and will run monthly during term time. Aimed primarily at families of deployed personnel, The Book Clubs will seek to bring families together for fun-filled activity sessions based around the theme of a popular children’s book. While children play, parents can socialise and Pastoral Workers will be on hand to provide support and a listening ear to anyone struggling with the challenges that deployment can bring.

The annual events are a much-loved date on the calendar when serving personnel are given the opportunity to share their working life with their loved ones. Families are able to relax and recuperate within their own community, without the pressure of operations, which is particularly important on stations where personnel are deployed short notice.
The RAF Benevolent Fund made grants to 34 stations, awarding a total of £47,000 to support the events.

“The five families are all patients from the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) at Headley Court, which aims to return all those service personnel injured or seriously ill to full fitness. DMRC is a nationally recognised centre of excellence that provides rehabilitation for more complex injuries, including amputee and neurological patients.

Read moreA third of serving RAF personnel can now benefit from free communal wi-fi provided by the RAF Association. The charity has made a £1.2million investment to keep serving airmen and women connected to their friends and loved ones and it is proving a huge success. Studies show that workplace loneliness leads to poorer performances in tasks and lesser contributions to team roles[1]. The ability to stay connected digitally helps to avoid some of those issues for people stationed away from home.
16 RAF stations and more than 11,000 personnel can now benefit from the free wi-fi. The project came about when the Association was told of the social isolation that many new recruits feel on commencing their service life. Security considerations often prevent access to military wi-fi for personal use and the cost of extra infrastructure to reach the more remote RAF bases is usually prohibitive.

Read moreA grant of £3,000 has been awarded to the Army Families Federation (AFF) by the Forces in Mind Trust, to hold a research symposium in partnership with King’s Centre for Military Research this November, at the Victory Services Club, London.
Following the success of the event in 2015, AFF had planned to hold a second symposium in June this year. However, due to the terrorist attack that took place around London Bridge the weekend before the symposium, the event was postponed. Without additional funding, it would not have been possible to re-schedule the symposium for the foreseeable future.
Read moreRAF Shawbury’s new play park was officially unveiled during its Families Day event by Air Vice-Marshal Warren James CBE, Air Officer Commanding 22 (Training) Group. He cut the blue ribbon in front of excited and eager children, who proceeded to test out their new play area.

The new layout has been designed for children of all ages, replacing one which only catered for toddlers. It was created in consultation with the young people at RAF Shawbury.
