Donations from the Annington Trust top £100,000 in 2016

Woodentots Nursery situated within HMS Collingwood, the Royal Navy’s training establishment in Plymouth was just one of a number of Service community projects that successfully bid for funding from The Annington Trust in 2016.

The Annington Trust was established for the benefit of Services Families living on the Married Quarters Estate with the objective of sponsoring community activities and projects.

On Thursday 23 March, to mark the uniquely important role The Defence Medical Welfare Service plays in our society, they were delighted to welcome their Patron, Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Wessex GCVO, The Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Nick Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC Gen and The Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mr Nigel Atkinson to the Charity’s Headquarters in Andover. The visit provided the perfect platform for highlighting the successes of the work undertaken and promoted the fantastic welfare support carried out every day. This is an organisation which is leading the way in professionalising the welfare space and which delivers an impact disproportionate to its size.

Bedtime reading as important as ever for UK parents and children

RAF Association’s Storybook Wings scheme helps serving parents to ‘make it home’ for bedtime

70% of parents read to their child at least once a day*, according to new research from the Royal Air Forces Association, the largest UK charity for serving and former RAF personnel.

The Association surveyed members of the public ahead of International Storytelling Day to find out more about the average bedtime in a UK household. Despite technological advances, a surprising 83% of parents and grandparents still prefer to read physical books to their child/grandchild, rather than using devices like a Kindle or iPads.

Housing Options Scotland (HOS) is a housing charity with almost 20 years of experience helping disabled people find the right house in the right place. In 2012 the organisation created a pilot project called “Military Matters” which aimed to give housing advice and support to disabled veterans in Scotland, or those who wished to return or relocate to Scotland. Through the life of the Military Matters project, HOS has also carried out housing briefs, created publications and given advice and support to all veterans, those in transition and those currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Staff and Governors from military charity The Royal Star & Garter Homes received a warm welcome from the Mayor of High Wycombe at an event to introduce the Charity to its new neighbours on Thursday 16 March.

The Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, the Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council David Letheren, Councillor Suzanne Brown, the Mayor of High Wycombe, local councillors and other supporters and stakeholders attended the reception at The Wycombe Swan to preview the plans for the new state-of-the-art Home being built in the Hughenden area.

Edinburgh school takes on military marching competition for UK’s service charities

Pupils from George Watson’s College take to drill for Red, White & Blue Day

On March 16th, senior pupils from George Watson’s College in Edinburgh took part in a special military marching house competition to raise awareness for Red, White & Blue Day, a national fundraising day for the UK’s main service charities that the School has supported regularly over the last few years. The competition saw the pupils battle against each another in their respective school Houses, with the winners being chosen by the Garrison Sergeant Major of the Edinburgh Army Garrison.

The tenth annual Lord Mayor’s Big Curry Lunch is to take place on Thursday 6th April 2017 and will feature HRH The Duke of York as its Guest of Honour. The Lunch, in aid of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, has raised more £1.5 million since its launch in 2007 and attracts some of the leading figures in Government and the City.
